Chapter 5 - The Betrayal

The intelligence agents advanced slowly, their assault rifles aimed directly at us.

I pulled my weapon, but I was completely outgunned in the open subway station.

Elena slowly raised her hands, shouting her clearance code to the team leader.

The leader, a tall man with cold gray eyes, ignored her completely.

He ordered his men to secure the high-value targets and eliminate the loose ends.

He pointed specifically at me and Elena, making it clear we were the loose ends.

Elena stared at him in absolute shock, realizing the agency had betrayed her.

They didn't want to expose the cartel's cloning operation; they wanted to control it for themselves.

The agents moved forward, zip-tying the terrified boys' hands behind their backs.

Mateo cried out, looking at me with those eyes that were exactly like mine.

I felt a surge of pure, primal rage that I hadn't felt in twenty years.

I wasn't just a grieving husband anymore; I was Alejandro Moretti.

I dropped to the ground and fired, hitting the agent holding Mateo in the leg.

Chaos erupted in the subway station as gunfire echoed off the concrete walls.

Elena snatched a fallen rifle and provided covering fire, her movements sharp and deadly.

I grabbed the boys and pushed them behind a rusted metal pillar, shielding them from the bullets.

The agents were highly trained, but they weren't prepared for a desperate father fighting for his children.

I moved with ruthless efficiency, taking down two more men before my clip ran empty.

Elena threw me a spare magazine, and I reloaded seamlessly.

We managed to push the agents back toward the tunnel entrance, giving us a brief window of opportunity.

I saw a heavy steel maintenance door on the opposite platform, leading deeper into the underground maze.

I yelled for Elena to take the boys and run for the door while I held off the remaining agents.

She didn't hesitate, grabbing the children and sprinting across the tracks.

I provided suppressive fire, keeping the agents pinned down until the boys were safely through the door.

I turned to run, but a bullet grazed my shoulder, sending a sharp jolt of pain down my arm.

I stumbled through the maintenance door, slamming it shut and locking it behind me.

I slumped against the cold steel, breathing heavily, my shoulder bleeding profusely.

Elena was tearing off a piece of her shirt to bandage the wound when the door handle rattled violently.

But the rattling wasn't coming from the agents on the other side.

It was coming from a massive, hidden lock on the ceiling, and it was sealing us inside.
