Chapter 3 - The Escape

Elena moved with the lethal grace of a trained assassin, dropping three of Victor’s men instantly.

The rest of the cartel soldiers scrambled for cover behind the shattered remnants of my furniture.

I pushed myself up from the marble floor, my ears still ringing from the explosion in the east wing.

I fired my weapon, covering Elena as she shoved the four boys toward the secret kitchen stairwell.

She yelled at me to follow her, her voice surprisingly steady amidst the chaos.

We sprinted down the narrow stairs, plunging into the damp darkness of the underground wine cellar.

I slammed the heavy steel door shut behind us and threw the deadbolt.

I turned to Elena, demanding to know where a housekeeper learned to shoot like a special forces operative.

She didn't answer; she was entirely focused on the four boys huddled in the corner.

She quickly checked them for injuries, her hands moving with practiced efficiency.

The smallest boy, Mateo, tugged on her sleeve, his eyes wide with fear.

He asked if the bad men were going to take them back to the white rooms.

Elena promised him they would never go back there as long as she was alive.

I grabbed her arm, spinning her around to face me.

I demanded the truth about who she really was and what was going on in my house.

Elena looked at me, her expression hardening into something cold and professional.

She revealed that she was not just a housekeeper; she was Sofia's handler from the intelligence agency.

Sofia had not been working for the cartel; she had been deeply undercover to expose their cloning operation.

The agency had placed Elena in my home eleven years ago to protect Sofia and gather evidence.

I felt the ground shift beneath my feet as I realized my entire marriage had been a carefully constructed lie.

Before I could ask anything else, a heavy thud echoed against the steel door.

Victor’s men were attaching breaching charges to the hinges.

Elena pushed the vintage wine racks aside, revealing the hidden panic room I thought only I knew about.

She pushed the boys inside and turned back to face me.

She told me that if we were going to survive, I needed to trust her completely.

I hesitated for a fraction of a second, torn between rage and desperation.

Then, a voice echoed from a hidden speaker near the ceiling of the wine cellar.

It was Victor, calmly informing us that he had already bypassed the panic room's ventilation system.

He stated that the room was currently filling with a lethal, fast-acting neurotoxin.
