Chapter 2 - The Truth About Sofia

I stared at Victor Silva, my mind refusing to process his horrific claim.

I told him he was lying; my wife would never steal children from a cartel boss.

Victor laughed, a dry, rasping sound that echoed off the high ceiling of the foyer.

He slowly pulled a thick folder from his jacket and tossed it onto the floor near my feet.

He told me to look at the medical records if I didn't believe him.

I kept my gun aimed at his heart while I kicked the folder open with my shoe.

The papers inside were covered in complex genetic sequencing charts and laboratory logos.

But it was the photographs that made my blood run cold.

There were pictures of Sofia standing inside a sterile, white facility, wearing a lab coat.

She wasn't just visiting the laboratory; she appeared to be running it.

Victor explained that my sweet, innocent wife had been his lead geneticist for six years.

She had been working on a highly classified cloning project for the cartel long before we met.

He claimed those four boys were not natural children at all.

They were genetically engineered clones created specifically for harvesting organs.

My stomach churned as I looked at the terrified boys clinging to Elena.

They had my eyes, my hair, and my features, but Victor claimed they were grown in a lab.

I demanded to know why Sofia would ever participate in something so monstrous.

Victor shrugged and said the research funding was simply too good for her to pass up.

He claimed she only ran away with the subjects when she started feeling guilty.

I refused to believe it, tightening my grip on my weapon.

I told Victor he was not taking those children out of my house, regardless of where they came from.

Victor’s men instantly raised their assault rifles, pointing them directly at me and Elena.

Victor sighed, shaking his head as if I were a disappointing child.

He pulled a small electronic detonator from his pocket and pressed a button.

A massive explosion ripped through the east wing of my mansion, shattering every window in the room.

The blast threw me to the floor, my ears ringing violently as smoke filled the air.

Through the debris, I saw Victor’s men marching toward the terrified children.

But before they could grab the boys, Elena did something impossible.

She pulled a suppressed submachine gun from under her apron and opened fire with military precision.
