Chapter 8 - The Confession on Tape

I slowly bent down, keeping my eyes locked on the barrel of his gun, and picked up the keys.

I walked to the back of the sedan, my hands trembling violently.

I pressed the trunk release button.

The lid popped open, revealing Nancy lying on a pile of blankets.

She was terribly pale, sweating, and barely breathing, but she was alive.

"Mommy," she whimpered weakly, reaching a tiny hand out to me.

I wanted to grab her and run, but Brandon cocked the hammer of the gun.

"Step away from the car, Samantha," he ordered aggressively.

I took three steps back, secretly sliding my hand into the pocket of the stolen lab coat.

I pressed the buttons on the stolen cell phone, navigating blindly to the voice recorder app.

I needed him to confess everything out loud.

"Why are you doing this, Brandon?" I cried out, stalling for time.

"Because the Santiago Cartel doesn't take IOUs, Samantha!" he yelled over the sound of the ocean.

"I lost eight million dollars of their money in offshore cryptocurrency bets."

"They threatened to slaughter Evelyn and my nephews if I didn't pay them back by Friday."

"Nancy's life insurance payout was the only clean money I could get in time."

"I made my mother feed her the magnets so the hospital would blame you."

"It was a perfect plan, until you found that damn camera footage."

I felt a quiet buzz in my pocket, signaling that the phone was recording every single word.

"Now, I'm going to shoot you, shoot my mother, and tell the police you went crazy and killed her before shooting yourself," Brandon declared.

He raised the gun and aimed it squarely between my eyes.

"Goodbye, Samantha," he said coldly.

Suddenly, the dock was blinded by the high beams of three black, armored SUVs.

The vehicles surrounded us in a tight circle, cutting off any possible escape route.

Brandon lowered the gun and smiled a sickening, relieved smile.

"Right on time," Brandon laughed. "The cleanup crew is here."

I braced myself for death as the doors of the SUVs swung open.

But the men who stepped out weren't wearing police uniforms.
