Chapter 10 - The Ultimate Sacrifice

The hitman lunged at me with the knife aimed directly at my chest.
A deafening gunshot echoed through the foggy air.
The hitman collapsed to the ground, clutching a bleeding wound in his shoulder.
Detective Miller stood ten feet away, his service weapon smoking in the rain.
"Drop your weapons, all of you!" the detective roared through a megaphone.
Dozens of SWAT officers swarmed the docks, tackling the cartel members to the wet concrete.
Hector was arrested before he could even reach his armored SUV.
Brandon was found cowering behind a rusted shipping container, crying like a coward.
Officers violently slammed Brandon onto the hood of a police cruiser and locked him in handcuffs.
I ignored all the chaos and frantically popped open the trunk of the sedan.
I pulled Nancy into my arms, holding her tiny, freezing body against my chest.
Paramedics rushed over immediately, wrapping her in thermal blankets and rushing her to an awaiting ambulance.
Evelyn was freed from the front seat and instantly agreed to testify against her son in exchange for total immunity.
Because of the secret audio recording I made on the docks, Brandon was indicted on federal charges.
He was sentenced to life in federal prison without the possibility of parole.
Three months later, the nightmare finally felt like it was over.
Nancy made a full, miraculous recovery from her emergency surgeries.
I was granted sole, absolute custody of my beautiful daughter.
We moved completely across the country to a stunning, sunlit house right on the beach.
Life was safe, quiet, and finally filled with genuine happiness.
I walked into the living room, carrying a mug of hot coffee, ready to unpack the very last moving box.
Nancy was sitting cross-legged on the soft rug, playing happily with her toys.
"Look Mommy, the nice man from the hospital gave me more shiny candies before we left," Nancy said with a bright smile.

My blood instantly froze into solid ice as I looked down at her hands.
I stared in absolute horror at the familiar, deadly metallic glint of thirty-six new magnets resting in her palm.
