Chapter 4 - The Cloud Backup

I stared at the taunting message on the screen, my heart sinking into my stomach.
Brandon was a former software engineer, and erasing digital trails was his specialty.
He had wiped my entire cloud drive remotely.
"It's gone," I whispered, dropping the phone onto the thin mattress.
Chloe picked up the device and inspected the screen with a deep frown.
"Wait, this isn't a permanent deletion," she noted, tapping the screen rapidly.
"He used a dual-authentication lock, which means the data is quarantined, not destroyed," Chloe explained.
I looked at her with a tiny glimmer of hope.
"How do we unlock it?" I asked frantically.
"You need the secondary trusted device to authorize the recovery," she replied.
I realized instantly what she meant.
"My old iPad," I gasped, "it's hidden in the false bottom of my bedroom closet!"
I had kept it hidden for years to store old family photos safely.
Brandon didn't even know that tablet still existed.
"We need someone to go to your house right now and get it," Chloe said, pacing the room.
I gave her the phone number for my best friend, Sarah, who lived just two streets away from my house.
Chloe dialed the number and quickly explained the life-or-death situation.
Sarah didn't ask questions; she immediately agreed to break through my back window.
We waited in agonizing silence for twenty minutes.
Finally, Sarah sent a text message to Chloe's phone.
"I'm in the closet, I found the iPad," the message read.
I let out a massive sigh of relief, feeling like the nightmare might finally end.
"Tell her to turn it on and hit the authorize button," I instructed quickly.
Chloe typed the message and waited for the confirmation reply.
Instead of a text, Chloe's phone suddenly rang with an incoming video call from Sarah.
Chloe answered it and held the screen up so I could see.
The video didn't show Sarah's face.
It showed Sarah lying unconscious on my bedroom floor.

The camera panned up to reveal Evelyn holding a heavy brass lamp in her hand.
"You always were too persistent, Samantha," Evelyn sneered into the camera.
