Chapter 5 - The Escape Through the Smoke

Evelyn ended the video call, leaving the screen completely black.

My best friend was hurt, my evidence was gone, and my daughter was still in danger.

Panic gripped my chest so tightly I could barely breathe.

I couldn't stay in this locked room anymore.

I looked at the small, reinforced window on the psychiatric ward door.

"I have to get out of here, Chloe," I said, my voice eerily calm.

Chloe shook her head violently.

"There are armed guards at the end of the hall, you'll never make it," she warned.

I walked over to the metal bed frame and began unscrewing a sharp, heavy metal rod from the railing.

"I don't care if they shoot me, I am getting my daughter," I declared.

Suddenly, the deafening shriek of the hospital fire alarm pierced the air.

Thick, acrid gray smoke began pouring in through the air conditioning vents in the ceiling.

The electronic lock on my heavy door buzzed and turned green.

"The fire system automatically unlocks all doors in an emergency!" Chloe shouted over the alarm.

We rushed out into the hallway, which was rapidly filling with a chaotic crowd of patients and staff.

People were coughing and pushing toward the emergency exit stairwells.

I grabbed a discarded doctor's lab coat from a laundry cart and pulled it over my paper gown.

"Go to the stairs, Chloe, save yourself!" I yelled to the nurse.

I turned in the opposite direction, sprinting toward the pediatric surgical wing.

I dodged security guards who were too distracted by the smoke to notice a barefoot woman in a lab coat.

I burst through the double doors of the Intensive Care Unit.

I frantically searched the room numbers until I found 412.

I slammed the door open, ready to rip the IV lines out and carry Nancy away in my arms.

The hospital bed was perfectly made, completely flat, and entirely empty.

The heart monitor was switched off.

A senior doctor turned around from the corner of the room, looking utterly shocked to see me.

"Where is she?" I screamed, grabbing him by the collar.

"Her father signed an Against Medical Advice discharge ten minutes ago," the doctor stammered.
