Chapter 6 - The Brother's Bargain

A tall figure stepped out of the dense, rainy woods, lowering a highly customized sniper rifle.
He was wearing a dark tactical mask and completely black combat gear that blended perfectly into the night.
The man walked up behind Julian and brutally kicked the back of his knees, forcing him into the mud.
He pulled a pair of heavy zip ties from his vest and secured Julian's wrists tightly behind his back.
The stranger then reached up and pulled the tactical mask off his face, revealing his true identity.
It was Julian's younger brother, Marcus, looking absolutely nothing like the polished socialite I remembered.
Marcus stared at me with cold, calculating eyes and loudly announced that he wanted to make a deal.
David stepped out onto the porch with his weapon raised, demanding that Marcus drop his rifle immediately.
Marcus complied, tossing the heavy weapon into the grass to prove he was not a threat to us.
He revealed that Eleanor had officially offered Julian to the syndicate as a blood sacrifice to cover the missing ten million dollars.
Marcus despised his mother and wanted to completely burn her corrupt empire down to the ashes.
He promised that he had enough evidence to put Eleanor in federal prison for the rest of her natural life.
I cautiously agreed to hear him out and allowed him to step inside the warm, illuminated safe house.
Marcus pulled a sleek black flash drive from his tactical vest and placed it gently on the dining table.
He explained that the drive contained all of Eleanor's blackmail files on corrupt politicians, judges, and local police chiefs.
It was the ultimate key to dismantling the entire criminal network that had protected the Thorne family for decades.
I plugged the flash drive into my secure laptop, eager to finally secure the evidence we desperately needed.
The screen flickered for a fraction of a second before flashing violently with a bright red malware warning.
I realized instantly that Marcus had not come to help us destroy his mother's empire.
The flash drive was a sophisticated tracking beacon that instantly broadcasted our exact coordinates to the syndicate.

Marcus smiled a wicked, terrifying smile as the laptop screen locked down completely.
He smoothly pulled a hidden ceramic blade from his boot, lunging directly across the table toward my throat.
