Chapter 5 - The Mountain Safe House

The line went dead, leaving a satisfying silence echoing in my ear.

I told David that the syndicate was already paying Eleanor a visit to collect their missing millions.

David drove us high into the remote mountains, navigating winding dirt roads that did not exist on any public map.

We arrived at a highly secure federal safe house surrounded by dense pine trees and reinforced steel fencing.

The agents helped Clara inside, setting her up in a comfortable bedroom with a warm fire blazing in the hearth.

I set up my temporary command center at the dining room table, connecting my laptop to the encrypted federal network.

I wanted to ensure that Julian could not run away when the syndicate inevitably came for him.

I used my forensic tools to freeze every single domestic asset connected to Julian's name.

His credit cards were declined, his bank accounts were locked, and his digital wallets were completely erased.

Julian was now a penniless man running for his life in a city completely controlled by the people he owed money to.

I knew Julian was a coward, and cowards always seek out soft targets when they are cornered.

I monitored the security cameras surrounding the safe house, knowing it was only a matter of time before he found us.

Hours passed in tense silence as the storm raged outside, pounding heavy rain against the cabin windows.

Suddenly, the motion sensors on the perimeter fence triggered a silent alarm on David's tactical monitor.

I watched the screen as a muddy, battered sedan crashed through the outer gate and screeched to a halt.

Julian stumbled out of the driver's seat, looking completely unhinged and desperate.

He was holding a heavy silver revolver, waving it wildly at the dark, silent cabin.

David drew his weapon and prepared to breach the front door to neutralize the threat.

I stopped him, insisting that I needed to face Julian myself to show Clara that the monster could be defeated.

I stepped out onto the covered porch, standing perfectly still with my hands empty at my sides.

Julian aimed the gun directly at my chest, his eyes wide with madness and pure hatred.

He screamed that I had ruined his life and that he was going to take everything from me in return.

Before he could pull the trigger, a bright red laser dot appeared perfectly on the center of his forehead.

May you like

Julian froze in terror, dropping the gun into the mud and slowly raising his trembling hands.

But the person holding the sniper rifle in the distant trees was not one of David's federal agents.
