Chapter 8 - The Arrest

The SWAT team pinned Nolan face-down on the floor, stripping his weapon and badge away in seconds.
The lead detective walked in behind them, holding up a clear plastic evidence bag containing my mother's fake scrubs.
"Nolan Vance, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder and attempted homicide," the detective announced loudly.
Nolan did not struggle.
He turned his head slightly to look at me, a chilling, dead-eyed smirk spreading across his face.
"You think this is over, Camille?" he whispered as they yanked him to his feet.
"This is exactly what I wanted."
They dragged him out of the room, a parade of blue uniforms disappearing down the corridor.
I stood there, shaking violently as the adrenaline finally left my bloodstream.
The nightmare was actually coming to an end.
My mother was in custody, Nolan was arrested, and the police were currently on their way to raid Sabrina's house.
I walked over to Harper’s bed and collapsed into the chair beside her.
I took her small, warm hand in mine and kissed her knuckles.
"We are safe now, baby," I cried softly.
"Mommy fixed it."
An hour later, a doctor walked into the room with a thick manila folder in his hands.
He looked exhausted but relieved.
"Mrs. Vance, we finally got the full toxicology report back from the lab," the doctor said.
"The beta-blocker was definitely in her system, but it was a very low dose."
"It was not enough to cause the collapse or the coma."
I stood up, wiping the tears from my cheeks.
"Then what caused it?" I asked, my voice trembling again.
The doctor flipped to the second page of the report and frowned deeply.

"We found traces of a highly synthetic neurotoxin, a poison only found in certain rare plants native to South America."
"It takes weeks to build up in the system before triggering a sudden collapse."
