Chapter 10 - The False Victory

Harper finally opened her eyes just as the sun began to rise over the city.

She blinked against the harsh hospital lights and turned her head toward me.

"Mommy?" she croaked, her voice weak but steady.

I burst into tears and threw my arms around her carefully, burying my face in her hospital gown.

"I am right here, sweetie," I sobbed, feeling a massive wave of relief wash over my entire soul.

"You are going to be perfectly fine."

Later that morning, the lead detective returned to the room with a warm smile on his face.

"Good news, Camille," he said, taking off his hat.

"We raided Sabrina's estate and found the trust documents, along with a massive wire transfer from Nolan's secret bank account."

"Both of them are locked in federal holding cells, and your mother has signed a full confession to avoid a maximum sentence."

The conspiracy that had suffocated my family was completely dismantled in a single night.

Harper was sitting up in bed, happily eating ice chips and watching cartoons on the small television.

I had won.

I had protected my daughter, exposed the traitors in my family, and survived the darkest day of my life.

I walked over to the chair where Nolan had left his police jacket before he was arrested, intending to throw it in the trash.

As I lifted the heavy fabric, a hidden pocket unzipped, and a small, unregistered burner phone dropped onto the floor.

The screen lit up instantly, displaying a new text message from an unknown number.

I picked it up and read the words that made my blood freeze in my veins.

The message read: "Nolan and the sister took the fall perfectly, just like we planned."

"The police are completely distracted by the family drama."

"Now that you have full control of the fifty million dollar trust, when do you want me to finish off the kid?"
