Chapter 7 - The Mastermind

The detective pulled my mother out of the room, leaving me completely alone with the rhythmic beeping of Harper's heart monitor.
My past had collided with my present in the most violent way imaginable.
Nolan had not married me out of love.
He had married me to infiltrate my life, wait until I had everything to lose, and then destroy it all.
He teamed up with my greedy, sociopathic sister to orchestrate the perfect revenge.
The door clicked open, and Nolan walked in holding two cups of steaming coffee.
He looked at the acid burned into the floor and the police tape hanging near the window.
"Camille, what happened?" Nolan gasped, dropping the coffee cups and rushing to my side.
He played the part of the terrified father flawlessly.
I looked at his handsome face, the strong jaw, the concerned eyes, and I felt nothing but pure, unfiltered hatred.
"Someone tried to hurt her again," I said, keeping my voice perfectly steady.
"But the police caught her, Nolan."
"They caught my mother."
Nolan's eyes widened in genuine surprise, a crack in his perfect facade.
He had not expected my mother to be the assassin.
"Your mother?" he repeated, stumbling backward a step.
"Yes," I nodded, stepping closer to him.
"And she told the police everything about the trust fund, Sabrina's blackmail, and your brother in Seattle."
Nolan’s expression instantly went completely blank.
The warm, loving husband vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating stranger.
He slowly reached his hand toward the service weapon holstered at his hip.
"You should not have told me that, Camille," Nolan said, his voice dropping an octave.

Before he could unclip his holster, the hallway erupted in shouting.
Five heavily armed SWAT officers burst into the room, tackling Nolan to the ground before he could draw his gun.
