Chapter 4 - The Family Trust

I locked my phone screen before Nolan could turn around and see what I was watching.
My husband and my sister had poisoned my little girl together.
I felt a wave of nausea hit me so hard I had to grip the plastic armrests to keep from passing out.
"Are you okay, Camille?" Nolan asked, rushing over to kneel in front of my chair.
His eyes looked so full of genuine concern that it terrified me.
"I am just dizzy," I lied, forcing myself to look into the eyes of a monster.
"I need to go home and get Harper's favorite blanket for when she wakes up."
"I will go," Nolan offered immediately.
"No, I need to keep moving or I will lose my mind," I insisted, standing up quickly.
Nolan hesitated, but finally nodded and kissed my forehead.
I walked out of the hospital, but I did not drive to our house.
I drove straight to my parents' estate on the wealthy side of town.
My parents were still at the hospital, leaving their massive house completely empty.
I knew the code to the front gate and the combination to the wall safe in my father's study.
Sabrina's snide comment at the party about moving my voting shares into a trust kept replaying in my mind.
Motive was the only thing missing from this horrific puzzle.
I opened the heavy steel door of the safe and pulled out the thick leather binder labeled "Family Estate."
I flipped past the standard wills and deeds until I found a freshly printed document dated yesterday.
It was an emergency amendment to the family business succession plan.
I traced my finger down the legal jargon until I reached the final clause.
The words made the blood rush out of my head.
The document stated that if my only direct heir suffered a fatal medical event, I would be deemed mentally unfit to lead.
Upon Harper's death, my fifty million dollar controlling share of the company would not go to my parents.

The shares would immediately transfer to a joint holding account.
The account was co-signed by Sabrina and Nolan.
