Chapter 8 - The Betrayal Within

I threw myself backward just as the deadly needle grazed the edge of my shirt collar.
Tristan lunged at me with a demonic snarl that completely distorted his young, innocent face.
Julian dropped his phone and aggressively tackled the teenager to the ground before he could strike again.
The syringe clattered violently against the marble floor and rolled far under the living room sofa.
Tristan fought like a wild animal, screaming vile obscenities that no child should ever know.
Julian pinned him down securely and quickly bound his hands with a thick zip tie from a tactical bag.
I stood up, trembling with pure adrenaline, staring in disbelief at the monster wearing a child's face.
He had maliciously faked his injuries just to get inside the secure penthouse and finish the job himself.
He laughed loudly and proudly told me that Vanessa was not at the shipping docks at all.
He had purposely sent all of our heavy security away to leave us completely unprotected and alone.
The horrific realization hit me like a massive freight train crashing through a fragile brick wall.
Before I could say a single word, the penthouse power abruptly cut out, plunging us into total darkness.
The emergency backup lights flickered on a moment later, casting a dim red glow across the room.
The terrifying sound of the private elevator whirring to life echoed through the newly silent apartment.
Julian drew his concealed weapon and aimed it directly at the metal elevator doors.
I ran down the long hallway to the guest bedroom and quickly locked myself inside with Chloe.
I held her tight and prayed desperately that Julian could handle whatever was coming out of those doors.
A deafening blast violently shook the walls as the elevator doors were blown completely off their hinges.
I heard Julian shout a loud warning before a massive barrage of gunfire erupted in the living room.
I clamped my hands firmly over Chloe's ears so she would not hear the terrifying sounds of urban war.
The heavy gunfire ceased after a long, agonizing minute of pure chaos and destruction.
Heavy, confident footsteps began walking slowly down the hallway toward our fragile bedroom door.

The brass handle rattled fiercely before a very familiar, mocking voice called out my name.
Vanessa giggled through the damaged wood and told me it was finally time for a little family reunion.
