Chapter 2 - The Ex Wife Strikes

I grabbed Chloe from her bed and walked out into the freezing rain.
Zachary screamed from the porch that I would be back begging on my knees by tomorrow.
I ignored his pathetic threats and strapped my sleepy daughter into her car seat.
My hands shook uncontrollably as I started the engine and drove away into the dark night.
I had almost no money because Zachary had systematically isolated me from my career and friends.
I pulled into a cheap motel parking lot and paid for a room using an old secret credit card.
Chloe fell asleep immediately, completely exhausted from the traumatic evening.
I sat on the edge of the lumpy mattress and played the audio file from the unknown number.
The malicious voice on the recording belonged to Zachary's ex-wife, Vanessa.
She was laughing hysterically while Zachary promised her he would get rid of me soon.
They were planning to use Chloe as leverage to force me into signing away my parental rights.
My heart pounded heavily with a sickening mixture of terror and absolute rage.
I finally understood that my entire marriage had been a cruel setup from the very beginning.
The next morning, I woke up to a violent banging on the motel room door.
I looked through the dirty peephole and froze in pure shock.
It was not Zachary or the police standing outside in the hallway.
Vanessa was standing there wearing a designer coat and a wicked, triumphant smile.
She held up a piece of paper and pressed it firmly against the glass.
It was a formal eviction notice for my sick mother who lived across the state.
Vanessa yelled through the door that Zachary secretly owned the building my mother lived in.
She told me that if I did not surrender Chloe by noon, my mother would be homeless.
I unlocked the heavy door and stepped outside to face her head-on.
I told her she was a heartless monster for dragging innocent sick people into this.
Vanessa laughed cruelly and raised her hand to slap me across the face.
Before her hand could connect with my cheek, a stranger grabbed her wrist from behind.
A tall man in a tailored suit twisted Vanessa's arm until she gasped in sharp pain.

He looked at me with kind eyes and introduced himself as the best divorce attorney in the state.
He smiled and said he had been hired to represent me by a very powerful mutual friend.
