Chapter 8 - The Siege

The heavy black vehicles parked in a tight, aggressive formation on our ruined grass.
I watched through the shattered window as heavily armed men stepped out into the night.
They wore dark tactical gear and carried suppressed automatic weapons.
"They are here to collect the millions Graham stole from them," Leo said, dropping the handgun.
I knew the local police wouldn't arrive in time to stop a coordinated cartel assault.
"We have to give them the money," Harper suggested, her voice trembling with raw fear.
I looked at the canvas backpack sitting on the floor next to Vanessa's motionless body.
"They won't leave any witnesses alive, even if we hand over the cash," I realized with cold certainty.
I dragged the heavy mahogany desk across the room to barricade the broken office door.
The sound of shattering glass echoed from the kitchen as the men breached the ground floor.
Heavy boots stomped loudly across the hardwood floors, moving methodically toward our position.
I grabbed the black handgun Leo had dropped and checked the magazine.
There were only four bullets left to fend off an entire squad of professional killers.
"Mom, there is a hidden panic room behind the basement wine cellar," Harper suddenly remembered.
Graham had insisted on building it years ago, claiming it was for tornado safety.
"We can't get to the basement without crossing the main hallway," I whispered back in despair.
The doorknob of the office began to rattle violently as someone tried to force it open.
A deep, heavily accented voice commanded us to open the door and surrender the stolen cash.
I aimed the gun directly at the wooden panels, preparing for a final, desperate shootout.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening explosion rocked the entire foundation of the house.

The wall behind the bookshelf completely blew out, showering us in plaster and debris.
Standing in the massive hole, covered in dust, was Graham.
