Chapter 1 - The First Lie

I opened the second metal clasp.
The sound was surprisingly loud in the silent room.
Marcus tried to place his hand over mine.
I pulled my hand away and reached inside the leather case.
I pulled out a thick stack of certified property records.
I held them up for the entire country club to see.
My father had told everyone that I was simply being a selfish sister.
He claimed Derek and Briana just needed a temporary place to stay.
I handed the first document directly to my grandmother.
It was a commercial debt judgment from the state supreme court.
Derek did not just have a struggling construction business.
He owed four million dollars in unpaid vendor invoices and civil penalties.
Briana gasped and covered her mouth with her hand.
She looked at Derek with pure shock.
My father grabbed the microphone and ordered me to stop talking.
I refused to let go of the metal stand.
I pulled out the second document and held it toward Derek.
This paper was a fraudulent mechanic lien filed against my new house.

Someone had forged my signature to use my property as collateral for a massive corporate debt.
The notary stamp on the forged document belonged to Marcus.
