Chapter 5 - The Standoff

The air in the room grew suffocatingly heavy as Julian’s finger hovered over the small red button.

Agent Vance slowly raised his hands, signaling his team to hold their fire.

“Nobody move,” Vance commanded under his breath, his eyes darting around the room to calculate alternative angles.

“Julian, think about what you’re doing,” Dad pleaded, his voice breaking into a desperate sob.

“You’re talking about blowing up a residential street!”

“Shut up, old man,” Julian snapped, not even bothering to look at my father.

“You and your precious little dinner party were nothing more than a convenient blind spot for my operations.”

“Do you really think I cared about Caroline?”

“She was just a pretty, gullible girl with high-speed internet and an empty study.”

Caroline let out a heartbroken gasp, looking up from the stairs with tear-stained eyes.

“Julian... you said you loved me,” she whispered, her voice cracking with betrayal.

“I loved your administrative clearance, Caroline,” Julian corrected coldly.

“Now, Admiral Hart,” Julian shifted his focus back to me.

“We’re wasting time.”

“Walk toward the front door, or I turn this entire block into a crater.”

I didn't panic.

Decades of military strategy and high-stakes crisis management had trained my nervous system to remain ice-cold under pressure.

I took one slow, deliberate step forward.

“You’re making a tactical error, Julian,” I said, my voice eerily calm.

“You assume that because you bypassed the local router, you have total control of the network.”

Julian’s smile flickered for a fraction of a second, his confidence wavering slightly.

“What are you talking about?” he demanded.

“My remote link is active.”

“Look at the screen on your wrist, Julian,” I replied, nodding toward the smart watch strapped to his left arm.

Julian instinctively glanced down at his wrist.

The glowing screen on his watch had suddenly turned from green to a harsh, flashing crimson.

“Warning: Node compromised,” the small digital display flashed in bold text.

“Counter-intrusion protocol engaged.”

“You didn't just hack our database, Julian,” I continued, taking another slow step forward.

“You hooked your personal encryption key directly into our automated tracking grid when you accessed the transit manifests.”

“NCIS didn't just trace your IP address to this zip code.”

“They traced your personal satellite uplink to your car parked right outside in the driveway.”

Right on cue, the heavy sound of a synchronized tactical vehicle slamming into park echoed from the front street.

Bright, blinding high beams suddenly flooded through the front windows, illuminating the entire foyer in harsh white light.

“Federal Agents! Nobody move!” a megaphone boomed from outside.

Julian’s face drained of color, his hand trembling over the detonator button.

“You bitch,” Julian snarled, his eyes locking onto mine with pure murderous intent.

“If I'm going down, we’re all going down!”

He slammed his thumb down hard onto the red button.
