Chapter 1 - The Broken Glass

My father’s crystal champagne flute hit the hardwood floor with an explosive shatter.

Liquid and sharp shards sprayed across the polished surface, catching the warm overhead chandelier light.

Nobody moved.

The ambient jazz music playing softly from the kitchen speakers suddenly felt deafening.

Caroline’s mouth was frozen in a half-formed smirk that quickly morphed into a look of absolute bewilderment.

My mother dropped her napkin into her lap, her eyes darting frantically between Commander Nathan Reed and me.

Dad stood frozen, his hand still suspended in the air where he had just gestured toward me like an unwanted piece of furniture.

“An… admiral?” Dad finally choked out, his voice cracking slightly on the unfamiliar military title.

“You must be mistaken, Commander,” Caroline recovered quickly, forcing a nervous, high-pitched giggle.

“Evelyn is just an administrative analyst for logistics or something boring like that.”

Nathan did not even glance at my sister.

His eyes remained locked on mine, filled with a sudden, rigid mixture of professional respect and deep dread.

“I am not mistaken, Caroline,” Nathan said, his voice dropping into a low, commanding register.

“Rear Admiral Evelyn Hart is the Deputy Director of Naval Operations and Strategic Logistics.”

“She holds a two-star flag rank.”

“She outranks me, your father, and every senior officer stationed within a five-hundred-mile radius.”

The dining room became so quiet that you could hear the faint hum of the refrigerator in the distance.

Dad slowly lowered his hand, his face draining of all color until he looked like a ghost.

“Evelyn?” Dad whispered, his arrogance completely evaporated, replaced by a sudden, pathetic tremor.

“Why didn’t you ever say anything?”

I looked down at the glittering shards of glass resting near my father’s polished leather shoes.

“You never asked, Dad,” I replied softly, my tone completely devoid of warmth.

“You were always too busy listening to Caroline talk about her wedding plans to care about my career.”

I turned my gaze back to Nathan, who was still standing rigidly at attention.

“At ease, Commander Reed,” I said calmly.

“Let’s not ruin your engagement party over a simple misunderstanding of my desk job.”

Caroline slammed her champagne glass down onto the table with a loud thud that made everyone jump.

“This is a joke,” Caroline hissed, her face flushing a furious, ugly shade of crimson.

“You planned this.”

“You and this SEAL of yours cooked up some stupid stunt just to ruin my night!”

Before anyone else could speak, my phone buzzed aggressively in my pocket.

I pulled it out and saw an encrypted priority message flashing across the secure military display.

It was an urgent dispatch from the Pentagon command center.

My eyes scanned the first sentence, and my blood instantly turned to ice.

“Admiral,” the encrypted screen read, “the classified file you reviewed this morning has been breached from an unsecured residential IP address in this zip code.”
