Chapter 2 - The Security Breach

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone as the cryptic alert burned into my retinas.

An unsecured residential IP address in this exact zip code had just accessed our highest-level defense servers.

My mind raced through the classified logistics deployment plans I had signed off on just hours ago in Washington.

If those files fell into the wrong hands, maritime security operations across the entire Pacific fleet would be severely compromised.

I looked up from my phone and met Nathan’s heavy, knowing gaze.

He had clearly sensed the shift in my demeanor because his posture instantly tensed back into combat readiness.

“Is it active?” Nathan muttered under his breath, stepping half a pace closer to me.

“Very active,” I whispered back, my voice barely audible over the hum of the room.

“Someone in this house just downloaded the black-budget transit manifests.”

Dad, still recovering from his initial shock, forced an awkward, defensive laugh.

“Alright, enough with the secret agent games, Evelyn,” Dad snapped, trying desperately to regain control of his dining room.

“If you have some fancy title, fine.”

“But don’t come into my home and ruin Caroline’s special night with your paranoid dramatics.”

“Dad, shut up,” Caroline spat, her eyes narrowed with absolute venom as she glared at me.

“Can’t you see she is doing this on purpose?”

“She hates that I am getting married and living a normal, happy life while she is just an old spinster in a navy-blue suit.”

“Caroline, be quiet,” Mom finally spoke up, her voice trembling as she looked at Nathan’s tense face.

“Look at the Commander.”

“He isn't joking.”

Nathan ignored the family squabbling entirely.

He reached inside his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small, encrypted tactical radio.

“Command, this is Reed,” he spoke into the device with practiced precision.

“Initiate local network lockdown for coordinates zero-four-nine.”

“We have an active data exfiltration event in progress.”

A harsh, computerized voice crackled back through the tiny speaker immediately.

“Copy, Commander. Network lockdown engaged. All outgoing data streams are being intercepted.”

Dad’s eyes went wide with sheer panic as he realized the situation had escalated far beyond a family argument.

“What is the meaning of this?” Dad stammered, pointing a shaking finger at Nathan.

“You can't lock down my house!”

“This is a private residence!”

“It was a private residence, Arthur,” I said, finally stepping fully into the dining room light.

“Until someone connected to your home Wi-Fi network decided to commit an act of federal espionage.”

Caroline let out a shrill, hysterical laugh, shaking her head in denial.

“That is insane!”

“Nobody here knows anything about computers except for my fiancé’s IT guy, and he isn’t even here!”

I pulled a compact military diagnostic tablet from my leather briefcase by the door.

I tapped the screen three times, bringing up the real-time node connection map for the house.

A bright red pulsing dot blinked fiercely on the floor plan, pinpointing the exact room of the transmission.

It wasn't coming from the guest rooms.

It was coming directly from Caroline’s personal study upstairs.

Before I could take a step toward the stairs, the front doorbell suddenly chimed through the house.

May you like

It wasn't a normal doorbell ring.

It was the heavy, rhythmic pounding of tactical operators clearing a perimeter.
