Chapter 9 - The Final Seconds

I stared directly into the black barrel of Daniel's gun, refusing to beg for my life.

He pulled the hammer back, his finger tightening dangerously against the trigger.

"You destroyed everything!" he screamed, spit flying from his trembling lips.

Before the bullet could leave the chamber, the shattered glass windows exploded inward.

A massive stun grenade rolled across the carpet and detonated with a blinding flash of white light.

The deafening boom temporarily deafened everyone in the luxurious boardroom.

Daniel stumbled backward, dropping his weapon and screaming as he clutched his blinded eyes.

But he still held the explosive detonator tightly in his left hand.

Through the thick, acrid smoke, heavily armored men in tactical gear poured into the room from ropes outside.

"FBI Hostage Rescue, drop your weapons immediately!" a voice roared through a megaphone.

Volkov and his surviving Russian guards threw their weapons to the floor, recognizing they were completely outmatched.

The federal agents swarmed the room, tackling the mobsters and securing the area with ruthless efficiency.

I pushed myself up from the floor, my ears ringing violently from the blast.

I saw Daniel blindly stumbling toward the edge of the shattered window, his thumb hovering over the red button.

"Don't do it, Daniel!" I shouted, rushing toward him across the broken glass.

He turned toward the sound of my voice, a look of absolute despair replacing his manic rage.

"I am not going to prison, Elena," he cried brokenly, stepping closer to the terrifying drop.

A federal sniper’s red laser instantly painted a bright dot squarely in the center of Daniel's forehead.

"If your thumb moves even a fraction of an inch, my sniper will drop you," the FBI commander warned coldly.

Daniel looked down at the detonator, realizing his grand empire of lies had finally crumbled to dust.

The fight completely left his body, leaving only a pathetic, broken man.

He slowly loosened his grip, letting the black plastic detonator drop safely onto the soft carpet.

Two tactical agents instantly slammed him against the wall and locked heavy steel handcuffs around his wrists.

The nightmare was finally over.

I watched silently as they dragged my traitorous cousin out of the boardroom.

The FBI commander approached me gently, throwing a warm shock blanket over my trembling, soaked shoulders.

"The building is fully secured, Ms. Somor, and we apprehended Vanessa trying to flee through the basement," he assured me.
