Chapter 8 - The Ultimate Betrayal

The legal document was a financial death warrant cleverly disguised as a real estate transaction.

If Volkov accepted this transfer, the rival cartel would immediately declare war on his entire organization.

Daniel had planned to take the fifty million dollars and let the Russian mobster get slaughtered by his enemies.

I held the pen tightly, keeping my eyes locked on the terrifying fine print.

"Sign the paper, Elena, we are running out of time," Daniel demanded, sweating profusely.

I slowly lifted the pen away from the paper and looked directly at Nikolai Volkov.

"You really should hire better lawyers, Mr. Volkov," I said loudly and clearly.

Daniel's face went completely pale as he realized I had spotted his deadly trap.

"Shut up and sign it!" Daniel screamed, pointing his weapon at me with a trembling hand.

"Section four, paragraph two, explicitly transfers the entire Suarez Cartel debt to the new owner," I revealed to the room.

Volkov's dead eyes slowly turned away from me and locked onto Daniel's terrified face.

The temperature in the boardroom seemed to drop twenty degrees in a single second.

"Is this true, Daniel?" Volkov asked, his voice low and vibrating with murderous intent.

"She is lying, she is trying to turn us against each other!" Daniel lied frantically.

Volkov snatched the contract from the table and read the fine print himself.

A terrifying, dark smile spread across the Russian syndicate leader's scarred face.

"You tried to make me the target of a Mexican blood feud," Volkov whispered maliciously.

Volkov instantly signaled his men, who raised their rifles and opened fire on Daniel's mercenaries.

The boardroom erupted into absolute, deafening chaos as the two heavily armed factions destroyed each other.

I dove under the massive mahogany table, covering my head as bullets shattered the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.

Vanessa screamed and scrambled toward the emergency stairwell, completely abandoning her husband.

Daniel fired blindly into the smoke, still clutching the explosive detonator in his left hand.

I crawled across the carpeted floor toward the hidden panic button located under the executive chairs.

I slammed my fist onto the button, overriding the building's lockdown and alerting the federal authorities directly.

The gunfire suddenly stopped as Volkov's men successfully eliminated the last of Daniel's guards.

I peeked out from under the table, hoping to find a clear path to the exit.

Instead, I found Daniel standing directly over me, his face covered in blood and madness.

He aimed his gun directly at my chest, completely ignoring the Russian mobsters closing in on him.

"If I cannot have the resort, nobody can," Daniel whispered, preparing to pull the trigger.
