Chapter 6 - The Syndicate Boss

The freezing water from the sprinklers soaked my torn clothes as I stared at the Russian mobster.
Volkov did not look angry; he looked genuinely amused by our pathetic family drama.
Daniel fell to his knees on the flooded floor, holding his hands up in sheer panic.
"Please, Mr. Volkov, she is crazy, she is ruining the deal!" Daniel begged pathetically.
Volkov ignored him entirely and kept his cold, dead eyes locked on my face.
"I was told the majority trustee was tragically killed in an automobile accident this morning," Volkov noted calmly.
"As you can see, reports of my death were greatly exaggerated," I replied, keeping my gun pressed against Vanessa.
Volkov chuckled softly and lowered his silver revolver just an inch.
"I am a businessman, Ms. Somor, and I prefer to buy properties legally."
"If you are alive, the contract Daniel signed is completely worthless to me."
Daniel scrambled forward in the water, grasping desperately at Volkov's expensive trousers.
"Shoot her!" Daniel screamed like a spoiled child throwing a violent tantrum.
"If you kill her right now, the forgery becomes real, and the resort is yours!"
Volkov looked down at Daniel with a look of absolute, unadulterated disgust.
"I do not take orders from sniveling cowards who hide behind their wives," the Russian boss growled.
He kicked Daniel fiercely in the chest, sending my cousin sprawling across the wet marble.
Volkov turned his attention back to me, adopting a tone of dangerous negotiation.
"I have already transferred fifty million dollars to your cousin's offshore accounts, Elena."
"I am not leaving this building without the deed to the resort, or the blood of your entire family."
I knew I had to play this incredibly carefully to survive the next few minutes.
"Daniel cannot give you the resort, but I can authorize a full refund of your money right now," I offered smoothly.
Volkov raised an eyebrow, genuinely considering my logical proposal.
Suddenly, a loud, synthetic alarm began blaring from Daniel's cell phone on the floor.
Daniel snatched the phone, looked at the screen, and began laughing hysterically like a maniac.
"Nobody is getting a refund, and nobody is leaving this room alive!" Daniel shouted.

He held up a small, black detonator switch with a glowing red button.
"I wired the structural pillars of this building with C4 explosives yesterday."
