Chapter 4 - The Unlikely Alliance

The final bell rang with a shrill intensity that made me jump out of my seat.

I quickly packed my backpack, avoiding Mrs. Keller's watchful eyes as I slipped out the door.

The rain had stopped, leaving the school grounds damp and smelling heavily of wet asphalt.

I walked toward the rusted aluminum bleachers by the practice field, my mind racing with terrifying possibilities.

Jake was already waiting there, leaning against a chain-link fence with his arms crossed tightly.

He wasn't the kind of guy I ever expected to speak to me, let alone offer to help.

He quickly explained that he had been observing Mrs. Keller's bizarre behavior for months.

"She plays favorites, but it has nothing to do with how smart you are," Jake muttered angrily.

He revealed that she had approached several failing student athletes with an illegal proposition.

For a substantial monetary donation to her "classroom fund," their failing grades would magically turn into passing marks.

Jake had refused her offer, choosing to study relentlessly instead, and she had despised him ever since.

He knew that her stellar reputation among the wealthy parents was built entirely on this massive extortion scheme.

"We need solid proof if we are ever going to take her down," he told me, his eyes blazing with determination.

He had a plan, but it required an unbelievable amount of risk from both of us.

Jake knew that Mrs. Keller kept a secondary, handwritten ledger of the actual grades before she altered them for the administration.

He believed she hid this illegal ledger in the bottom drawer of her heavy oak desk.

Since she was currently attending a mandatory faculty meeting in the library, her classroom was totally empty.

We snuck back into the main building, moving silently through the deserted corridors.

The door to her classroom was locked, but Jake produced a small sliver of rigid plastic.

With a quick, practiced motion, he popped the old latch open, and we slipped into the dark room.

We quickly made our way to the imposing oak desk and began pulling at the drawers.

The bottom drawer was stubbornly stuck, requiring both of us to yank on the handles with all our strength.

Just as the drawer finally slid open, revealing a thick black notebook, a loud noise echoed behind us.

The bright overhead lights snapped on, blinding us instantly.

Standing in the doorway with a heavy mop in his hand was the night janitor.

He narrowed his eyes, reached for the walkie-talkie on his belt, and growled, "What exactly do you two think you're doing?"
