Chapter 3 - The View from the Back Row

The meeting in the guidance counselor's office was an absolute nightmare.

Mrs. Keller played the role of the deeply concerned, misunderstood educator with Oscar-worthy perfection.

She told Mr. Harrison that I was simply projecting my academic frustrations onto her.

Whenever administrators were observing her, she was a master of disguise.

"Take your time," she would say to me in a warm, nurturing tone while the principal watched from the corner.

But as soon as the door clicked shut and we were alone, her true colors returned with a vengeance.

After my failed attempt to report her, the psychological torture escalated drastically.

She stopped calling on me altogether, ignoring my raised hand as if I were a ghost.

If I made a minor mistake on a worksheet, she would hold it up for the entire class to see.

By the time the warm spring breeze rolled in, I was completely broken.

I officially gave up asking questions or trying to participate in her terrifying academic circus.

I moved my belongings to the very last desk in the back corner of the room.

My only daily goal was to watch the clock and pray for the final bell to ring.

I retreated entirely into my own mind, accepting my fate as the class punching bag.

The other students noticed my defeat, but they were too afraid of her wrath to intervene.

I felt incredibly isolated, drowning in a sea of confusing numbers and public humiliation.

I honestly thought I was entirely alone in my silent rebellion.

That changed on a rainy Tuesday afternoon during a particularly grueling pop quiz.

I was staring blankly at an equation, completely defeated, when a crumpled piece of loose-leaf paper bounced off my desk.

I quickly glanced around the silent room to see who had thrown it.

Jake, the captain of the track team and one of the most popular guys in school, gave me a subtle nod.

I cautiously unrolled the little paper ball under the cover of my textbook.

The messy handwriting inside made my breath catch in my throat.

"I know she's trying to ruin you, and I have proof that she's altering grades for cash," the note read.

Underneath those shocking words was a final, dangerous instruction.

"Meet me by the old football bleachers right after the final bell."
