Chapter 9 - The Ledger

The entire kitchen went completely silent.

I looked at Chloe in shock, having no idea what she was talking about.

“A notebook?” the detective asked, crouching down to Chloe's eye level.

Chloe nodded slowly, wrapping her arms around herself.

“Liam likes to keep track of things.”

“Every time he hurt me, he made me write down the date, the time, and what my punishment was for.”

“He called it my accountability ledger.”

I felt physically sick to my stomach.

Liam was not just an abuser; he was a sadist who forced his victim to document her own trauma.

“Where is this notebook, Chloe?” the detective asked, her tone turning incredibly serious.

“He keeps it locked in a safe under the floorboards in his closet,” Chloe answered.

The detective immediately stood up and radioed the officers upstairs.

“I need a team in the suspect's bedroom right now.”

I held Chloe’s hand as we waited in agonizing suspense.

Ten minutes passed like an eternity.

Finally, an officer came down the stairs carrying a small, heavy black lockbox.

He set it on the kitchen counter.

“Suspect refuses to provide the combination,” the officer reported.

The detective grabbed a heavy flathead screwdriver from Dad's tool bag on the counter.

She wedged it into the latch of the cheap lockbox and hit it with a meat tenderizer.

The metal lock snapped open.

Inside the box was a small, worn leather journal.

The detective opened it with gloved hands.

I leaned over and saw the pages filled with Chloe’s terrified handwriting.

There were dates stretching back for three years.

Every page detailed horrific emotional and physical abuse, perfectly cataloged by Liam's twisted demands.

Tucked into the back of the journal was a hard drive.

“What is that?” I asked.

“It looks like physical backups of his camera feeds,” the detective said, her eyes narrowing.

She turned to the uniform officer at the door.

“Arrest him.”

I let out a massive sigh of relief as I heard the metallic click of handcuffs in the living room.

Liam started screaming and cursing, his perfect facade completely shattered.

They marched him past the kitchen in handcuffs, his clothes soaked from the rain.

He glared at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.

“This is not over,” Liam sneered.

The police shoved him into the back of the cruiser and slammed the door.

Mom was released from her cuffs, and she ran into the kitchen to hug us.

We collapsed onto the floor, holding each other as the nightmare finally ended.

The paramedics finally managed to wake Dad up in the living room.

An officer handed Dad the journal and explained exactly what his favorite son had been doing.
