Chapter 10 - The New Beginning

Dad fell to his knees in the living room, weeping over the leather journal.
He realized his blind trust in Liam had allowed his youngest daughter to suffer for years.
He begged Mom and Chloe for forgiveness, but the damage was already done.
Mom filed for divorce the very next morning.
She packed our things, and we never spent another night in that house.
Liam was formally charged with multiple counts of assault, false imprisonment, and illegal surveillance.
With the journal and the backup hard drives as undeniable evidence, his expensive lawyer could not save him.
He accepted a plea deal that guaranteed he would spend the next decade in a state penitentiary.
Six months later, we moved into a beautiful, bright apartment on the other side of the city.
The heavy dread that used to hang over our family was completely gone.
Mom got a better job at a private clinic, and her stress melted away.
Chloe was finally smiling again, making new friends at a much better high school.
She threw away all her long-sleeved shirts and started wearing bright, colorful summer dresses.
I transferred to a local university and spent my evenings helping Chloe with her homework.
Our home was finally safe.
There were no locks on the outside of our doors, and there were no hidden cameras in our vents.
We had survived the monster hiding in our own family.
One Saturday afternoon, I was helping Chloe unpack the last of her storage boxes in her new bedroom.
I pulled out a stack of old textbooks and noticed something slip out from between the pages.
It was a cheap, prepaid burner phone with a cracked screen.
I picked it up, confused, and pressed the power button.
The screen illuminated, showing a single unread text message received ten minutes ago.
I opened the message, and my blood instantly turned to ice.
It read: "I bonded out on an appeal this morning. See you soon, little sister."

I looked up, realizing the phone was not registered to Liam.
It was registered to Dad.
