Chapter 2 - The Ice Pack

Mom walked through the front door carrying a bag of groceries.
She looked exhausted from working a double shift at the hospital.
The moment she stepped inside, Liam changed instantly.
His posture softened.
His shoulders dropped defensively.
Before Mom could even set her keys on the counter, Liam started his performance.
He told her that Chloe had worked herself up again.
He claimed I had walked in during the middle of her panic attack and misunderstood the situation.
Then he did exactly what Mom had seen him do a dozen times before.
He went straight to the kitchen freezer.
He pulled out a blue gel ice pack.
“I was just about to take care of her,” he said sweetly.
Chloe stared at the frozen plastic in his hand.
“That is what he gives me after,” she whispered, her voice trembling.
Liam let out a rehearsed, exasperated laugh.
But this time, Mom did not join him.
The exhaustion left her face, replaced by a sudden, terrifying clarity.
She dropped her grocery bag onto the floor.
She walked straight past him and checked the bathroom latch herself.
Liam followed her, nervously explaining that the latch did not prove anything.
He insisted Chloe was just confused and looking for attention.
Mom looked at the heavy latch on the outside of the door.
Mom looked at Chloe’s tightly covered arm.
Mom looked at the ice pack in her oldest son's hand.
Then she looked directly into Liam's eyes.
For years, that ice pack had meant one thing to her.
It meant her responsible oldest son was taking care of his fragile little sister.
Now Chloe had given that object a second, horrifying meaning.
And Liam had carried the proof of that meaning into the room all by himself.
Mom crossed the kitchen with purposeful strides.
She snatched the ice pack right out of his hand.
She positioned herself firmly between him and the front door.
“Sit down,” Mom ordered, her voice completely devoid of warmth.
Liam blinked, the arrogant smirk slipping from his face.
“Mom, you cannot seriously believe her over me.”
“I said sit down,” she repeated.
Liam slowly backed up and sat on the edge of the living room sofa.
Mom turned to me and gently asked to see Chloe’s arm.
Chloe hesitated, but I nodded encouragingly.
She slowly rolled up her sleeve, revealing a perfectly formed handprint bruised into her pale skin.
Mom gasped, her hand flying to cover her mouth.
The undeniable shape of large fingers was pressed into my sister's flesh.
“Liam, what did you do?” Mom whispered in horror.
Liam stood up quickly, his hands raised in surrender.
“She fell down the stairs, and I tried to catch her.”
It was a desperate, sloppy lie.
Mom pulled her phone out of her pocket.
“I am calling your father, and then I am calling the police.”
Liam’s face drained of color.
“Do not call Dad,” Liam warned, his voice dropping an octave.
May you like
He took a step toward Mom, and he was no longer acting like the sweet son.
“If you call Dad, I will tell him what I found in your nightstand last week.”
