Chapter 7 - The Escape

Mom ducked just in time.

The laptop smashed against the doorframe, shattering into a dozen pieces.

The sudden distraction was all Liam needed.

He lunged forward and grabbed the barrel of the rifle, forcing it upward.

The gun went off with a deafening roar, blowing a hole in the ceiling.

Plaster rained down on us in the dark.

Mom screamed as Liam violently wrenched the weapon out of her hands.

He threw the rifle down the hallway, well out of our reach.

“Run!” Mom shouted, grabbing my arm.

I grabbed Chloe, and the three of us sprinted out of the bedroom.

We practically threw ourselves down the dark wooden staircase.

The smoke alarm began screaming, triggered by the gunpowder.

We reached the bottom floor and ran toward the kitchen.

Dad was completely unconscious on the living room sofa, snoring heavily despite the chaos.

Mom grabbed her car keys from the kitchen counter.

We burst through the garage door, our bare feet hitting the cold concrete.

“Get in the car!” Mom yelled, hitting the unlock button on her key fob.

The headlights of her sedan flashed in the dark garage.

I threw open the back door and shoved Chloe inside.

I climbed in after her, locking the doors immediately.

Mom jumped into the driver's seat and jammed the key into the ignition.

The engine roared to life.

She hit the button to open the heavy automatic garage door.

The motor hummed, and the metal door slowly began to rise.

Rain poured heavily onto the driveway outside.

But as the door lifted halfway, a figure rolled under it from the outside.

It was Liam.

He stood up slowly in the pouring rain, blocking the driveway.

He was holding a large steel crowbar he must have grabbed from the tool shed.

“Run him over,” I yelled from the back seat.

Mom hesitated for a fraction of a second.

It was her son standing in front of her car.

That hesitation cost us everything.

Liam stepped forward and swung the crowbar directly into the front grille of the car.

Steam hissed violently from the shattered radiator.

He walked to the side of the car and smashed the driver's side window.

Glass shattered over Mom’s lap as she screamed.

Liam reached inside and violently ripped the keys out of the ignition.

The car engine died instantly.

He threw the keys into the storm drain at the end of the driveway.

“Nobody is leaving this house,” Liam said calmly.

He raised the crowbar again, preparing to smash the windshield.

Suddenly, the blinding red and blue lights of a police cruiser flooded the wet driveway.
