Chapter 9 - The Final Betrayal
The holding cell at the federal courthouse smelled like bleach and stale coffee.
I stood on the other side of the glass, watching Denise pace back and forth in her orange jumpsuit.
She looked small and pathetic without her expensive clothes and arrogant smirk.
"You ruined our family over a stupid misunderstanding," she spat through the intercom.
I pressed the button on my side of the glass.
"You planned to murder my son for an insurance payout," I replied evenly.
"Kara already confessed to everything to secure a plea deal."
Denise stopped pacing, the color completely draining from her aged face.
She realized that her favorite daughter had just thrown her under the bus to save herself.
"She is lying!" Denise shrieked, slamming her hands against the reinforced glass.
"It was her idea to leave him at the park to establish a record of negligence!"
I smiled, tapping the small recording device Agent Vance had placed in my pocket.
She had just confessed to the conspiracy on a federally recorded line.
I walked away from the glass, ignoring her desperate screams echoing down the hallway.
Agent Vance was waiting for me in the lobby with Elliot securely by his side.
We walked into the courtroom, holding our heads high.
The corrupt judge had been replaced by a stern, honorable federal magistrate.
The room was packed with reporters, drawn by the massive money laundering scandal.
Kara and Denise were led in wearing heavy chains, refusing to look at each other.
The prosecutor laid out the mountain of evidence against them.
There was the timestamped park report, the forged medical documents, and the offshore bank transfers.
Their high-priced defense attorneys had absolutely nothing to say.
The judge looked down from the bench with an expression of pure disgust.
"I have seen many terrible things in my career," the judge began.

"But this level of familial betrayal is truly unfathomable."
He raised his gavel, preparing to deliver the final blow to their twisted empire.
