Chapter 5 - The Paper Trail
I stared at the fraudulent medical paperwork in pure horror.
The document bore a fake doctor's signature and detailed a rare, incurable disease.
My family had taken out a million-dollar life insurance policy on my healthy six-year-old boy.
They needed custody to control the medical narrative and the eventual payout.
A cold, terrifying realization washed over me.
They had left him at the theme park today hoping he would wander off and get hurt.
When he was safely found instead, they panicked and escalated to framing me.
I thanked the security manager and the police officer for saving my son's life.
I buckled Elliot into his car seat and locked every single door.
"Are we going home, Mommy?" he asked quietly.
"No, sweetie," I replied softly.
"We are going to a safe place."
I drove to a secure hotel across town and paid in cash.
Once Elliot was asleep in the bed, I opened my laptop and started digging.
I logged into the joint bank account I still shared with my mother from college.
I had not checked it in years.
My eyes scanned the recent transaction history.
There were massive, unexplainable wire transfers coming from offshore accounts.
Kara and Denise were mixed up in something far larger than simple greed.
They were laundering money for dangerous people.
I took screenshots of every single transaction and routing number.
My phone buzzed on the nightstand, making me jump.
It was an incoming call from Kara.
I hit the record button on my phone and answered in total silence.
"You think you won because Dad got arrested?" Kara mocked.
"The judge is a very close friend of our family."
"The emergency custody hearing is tomorrow morning at nine o'clock."
"If you do not show up, we get Elliot by default."
She hung up before I could say a single word.
I looked down at the financial documents glowing on my screen.
I did not need just a family lawyer anymore.
May you like
I needed the FBI.
Suddenly, a heavy, rhythmic knock echoed against my hotel room door.
