Chapter 7 - The Temporary Loss

"What are you doing?" I screamed, pulling my son securely behind my legs.
The lead social worker looked at me with cold, indifferent eyes.
"We received an anonymous tip about illegal narcotics found in your home," she stated.
My father had actually succeeded in planting the drugs before his arrest.
The corrupt judge slammed his gavel down again with a loud, final crack.
"The child will be placed in the temporary care of his grandmother, Denise."
Elliot began to cry hysterically, clinging to my tailored jacket.
"Mommy, please don't let them take me!" he begged.
My heart shattered into a million jagged pieces on the courtroom floor.
I looked frantically at Agent Vance, who was sitting quietly in the back row.
He gave me a subtle nod, silently urging me to trust the federal plan.
I knelt down and kissed Elliot's tear-stained cheeks.
"I will be back for you very soon, I promise," I whispered into his ear.
Denise smiled wickedly as she grabbed his small hand and pulled him away.
Kara leaned in close as they passed my table.
"You should have just kept your mouth shut," she hissed venomously.
I walked out of the courthouse feeling completely hollow and utterly destroyed.
For the next two days, I sat in the FBI command center watching hidden camera footage.
Vance had managed to plant a camera inside Denise's massive house.
I watched my son sitting alone in a dark room, hugging his knees.
Denise and Kara ignored him completely, drinking wine and celebrating their incoming wealth.
They were waiting for the insurance policy to fully activate.
On the second night, the audio feed picked up a chilling conversation.
"The policy clears tomorrow at noon," Kara said, swirling her glass.
"I know a doctor who will forge the death certificate for ten grand," Denise replied.
They were planning to kill my son tomorrow.
I stood up from the surveillance desk, my blood boiling with absolute rage.

I was not waiting for the FBI anymore.
I pulled a heavy wrench from the trunk of my car and drove straight to their house.
