Chapter 9 - The Poisoned Wristband

I dropped the phone and grabbed Maya's tiny wrist, my hands shaking violently as I inspected the white plastic hospital band.
At first glance, it looked like a standard admission bracelet with her name and barcode printed in black ink.
But as I turned her wrist over under the flashing red lights of the ambulance, I saw something absolutely terrifying.
A tiny, nearly invisible puncture needle was embedded directly into the plastic band, pressing firmly against her skin.
Attached to the needle was a micro-vial containing a clear, unknown liquid that was slowly, methodically dripping into her bloodstream.
Victoria had not just tried to kidnap my daughter with a fake court order; she had intentionally slipped this deadly device onto Maya's wrist during the struggle in the hallway.
"Medic!" I screamed at the top of my lungs, my voice cracking with pure, unadulterated terror. "I need a medic right now!"
A paramedic rushed over, taking one look at the device before his face turned completely pale.
"Do not pull it out!" the medic yelled, grabbing my hand to stop me from ripping the band off. "If you yank it, the pressure seal will break and inject the entire lethal dose instantly."
My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird as I watched the clear liquid slowly draining into my little girl's veins.
Maya looked up at me, her eyes heavy and unfocused, completely unaware of the deadly poison entering her system.
"Mommy, I feel really sleepy," she whispered, her head slumping against my chest.
The paramedic quickly pulled a specialized pair of surgical shears from his medical kit.
He expertly clamped the tiny plastic tube connecting the vial to the needle, stopping the flow of the poison.
With terrifying precision, he carefully extracted the needle from Maya's skin and tossed the entire wristband into a biohazard bag.
"We need to get her into a decontamination unit immediately and run a full toxicology screen," the medic ordered, loading Maya onto a stretcher.
I rode in the back of a new ambulance, holding my unconscious daughter's hand and praying desperately that we had stopped the poison in time.
Captain Vance followed closely behind us in his police cruiser, coordinating a massive city-wide manhunt for Victoria Sterling.
When we arrived at a secure, secondary medical facility on the other side of the city, a team of specialized doctors immediately took over Maya's care.
I paced the sterile waiting room for three agonizing hours, my clothes smelling of smoke and my hands covered in dried blood.
Finally, the lead toxicologist walked out of the intensive care unit, holding a thick medical file.
He offered a exhausted but reassuring smile that instantly lifted the crushing weight off my chest.
"The clamp stopped the lethal dose from entering her heart," the doctor explained. "We administered a broad-spectrum counteragent, and her vitals are completely stable. She is going to be perfectly fine."
I collapsed into a nearby chair, crying tears of profound, overwhelming relief.
My daughter had survived the brutal staircase assault, the hospital explosion, and a calculated assassination attempt.
Captain Vance walked into the waiting room, holding a tablet and looking incredibly grim.
"We found Victoria," Vance announced quietly, handing me the tablet to view the police report.
I expected to see a mugshot of Victoria in federal handcuffs, finally facing justice for her horrific crimes.
Instead, the screen displayed a crime scene photograph of Victoria's expensive designer car completely crushed at the bottom of a steep ravine.

"She missed a sharp turn while fleeing the hospital," Vance explained. "She was pronounced dead at the scene."
I stared at the photograph, realizing that Richard and Victoria's corrupt, violent empire had finally collapsed completely, burying them both in the rubble.
