Chapter 6 - The Secret Recording

Richard walked slowly around me, examining my handcuffed state like I was a defeated animal in a cage.

"You really thought a shiny badge could protect you from my money?" he mocked, stopping directly in front of me.

Agent Thorne stood quietly in the shadows, keeping a close eye on the warehouse doors.

"You are going to spend the rest of your life in a federal prison, Elena," Richard promised, stepping dangerously close. "And while you rot in a cell, Max is going to get a slap on the wrist, and I am going to take full custody of Maya."

My stomach violently twisted at the thought of my daughter living under the same roof as the boy who deliberately threw her down a flight of stairs.

"You cannot win this, Richard," I said, maintaining absolute, unwavering eye contact. "The truth always comes out eventually."

Richard laughed, a loud, echoing sound that filled the empty warehouse.

"The truth is whatever I pay for it to be," he bragged confidently. "I paid Thorne to forge the embezzlement files, I paid the bank manager to reinstate my name on your accounts, and I paid the mayor to look the other way."

He had just explicitly confessed to multiple federal crimes, completely blinded by his own towering arrogance.

"You really are a brilliant businessman, Richard," I said softly, allowing a small, calculated smile to touch my lips.

Richard frowned, clearly confused by my sudden lack of fear.

"What is that supposed to mean?" he demanded aggressively.

I shifted my handcuffed wrists slightly, pressing a hidden button on the digital smartwatch strapped to my wrist.

"It means you just provided a full, uncoerced verbal confession to a sitting judicial officer," I explained calmly.

The smartwatch was a highly specialized piece of equipment I used for recording sensitive judicial interviews in the chambers.

It was currently streaming a live, encrypted audio feed directly to the state police headquarters.

Richard's smug expression instantly vanished, replaced by sheer, unadulterated panic.

He lunged forward, desperately grabbing my wrist and trying to rip the heavy watch off my arm.

"Thorne, get that watch off her right now!" Richard screamed frantically.

Before the corrupt agent could even draw his weapon, the massive steel doors of the warehouse violently burst open.

Three armored SWAT vehicles crashed into the loading bay, heavily armed tactical officers pouring out with their assault rifles raised.

"Federal agents, drop your weapons and get on the ground!" the lead tactical commander bellowed through a megaphone.

Thorne immediately dropped his gun, raising his hands in terrified surrender.

Richard tried to run toward the back exit, but two officers tackled him brutally to the concrete floor, smashing his face against the rough surface.

Captain Vance walked into the warehouse, holstering his service weapon and shaking his head in disgust.

"You really messed with the wrong judge, Sterling," Vance muttered, unlocking my handcuffs with a master key.

I rubbed my sore wrists, feeling a profound sense of ultimate, hard-won victory.

"Book them both for conspiracy, extortion, and the attempted kidnapping of a federal officer," I ordered Vance.

The officers dragged Richard away, his expensive suit ruined and his face covered in dark blood.

I finally breathed a massive sigh of relief, knowing Richard's corrupt empire was officially crumbling to dust.

My phone rang loudly in my pocket, displaying a call from the hospital.

I answered immediately, expecting the nurses to tell me that Maya was finally waking up.

"Judge Elena," a panicked nurse screamed through the phone. "Victoria Sterling just walked into the hospital with a court order, and she is taking Maya away."
