Chapter 2 - The Security Footage

I snatched the USB drive from the principal's trembling hand and immediately plugged it into my encrypted laptop.
I needed to see exactly what had happened to my little girl on that stairwell.
The video file loaded onto the screen, showing the crowded school hallway during the afternoon dismissal bell.
I watched my daughter, Maya, walking quietly down the stairs, carrying a heavy backpack.
Max suddenly appeared behind her, surrounded by two other boys who were laughing and pointing.
What happened next made my blood run completely cold.
Max did not just push Maya down the stairs in a brief moment of childish anger.
He deliberately grabbed her backpack straps, yanked her backward, and violently shoved her down a full flight of concrete steps.
Maya tumbled helplessly, crashing hard onto the landing below.
My heart shattered as I watched my little girl lie motionless on the floor while Max and his friends stepped over her and laughed.
"This is not a bullying incident," I said, my voice shaking with profound rage. "This is felony aggravated assault."
I closed the laptop and glared at the principal, who was currently cowering in her leather chair.
"You watched this footage and still wrote it off as a simple accident?" I demanded.
"Richard threatened to ruin my career if I expelled his son," she sobbed defensively.
"Your career is officially over," I stated flatly, packing up my laptop. "I am launching a full state investigation into this school's administration tomorrow morning."
I walked out of the office, leaving the principal crying hysterically behind her desk.
I drove back to the hospital, desperate to hold my daughter and assure her that the monsters who hurt her were going to pay.
When I arrived at Maya's room, she was sleeping peacefully, the heavy pain medication finally taking effect.
I sat in the chair beside her bed, holding her uninjured hand and gently stroking her hair.
My phone vibrated in my pocket with a secure message from Captain Vance.
The message read: "Richard Sterling posted bail an hour ago. The mayor personally intervened."
I clenched my jaw, realizing that Richard's corrupt political connections were far deeper than I had anticipated.
He was not going to sit in a jail cell quietly; he was going to declare a massive, dirty war against me.
Suddenly, the heavy door to the hospital room swung slowly open.
A tall woman in a flawless designer suit stepped inside, her high heels clicking softly against the linoleum floor.
She removed her expensive sunglasses, revealing a pair of piercing, ice-blue eyes.

It was Victoria Sterling, Richard's new wife and Max's biological mother.
"Elena," Victoria said smoothly, looking around the sterile hospital room with obvious disgust. "I think it is time we had a little chat about our children."
