Chapter 8 - The Hospital Blackout

The deafening explosion echoed through the hospital corridors, followed immediately by the terrifying screams of panicked patients and medical staff.

The emergency backup lights flickered on, casting a dim, eerie red glow over the chaotic hallway.

The force of the blast had knocked everyone to the linoleum floor, including Victoria and Maya.

I scrambled desperately through the darkness, ignoring the sharp pain in my scraped knees, until I reached my daughter.

I pulled Maya tightly against my chest, shielding her fragile, broken arm from the frantic crowd of people rushing toward the stairwells.

"I've got you, baby, you are safe," I whispered repeatedly, kissing the top of her trembling head.

Victoria groaned nearby, struggling to stand up in her high heels amidst the panic.

I looked down the long hallway and saw thick, black smoke billowing from the hospital's main electrical and server room.

This was not a random accident or a tragic coincidence.

Richard’s corrupt associates were intentionally destroying the hospital's servers to wipe any digital evidence of his bribery, the forged medical reports, and the security footage of Max’s assault.

They were burning down the evidence, and they did not care who was trapped inside the building.

"We have to evacuate right now," Captain Vance yelled, appearing through the thick smoke with a heavy flashlight.

He grabbed my arm to pull me toward the emergency exit, but Victoria suddenly blocked our path.

She reached out and violently grabbed Maya's uninjured arm, trying to rip the child away from me in the darkness.

"The court order still stands, Elena!" Victoria screamed over the blaring fire alarms. "She is coming with me!"

I did not rely on my judicial authority this time; I relied purely on a mother's fierce, protective rage.

I shoved Victoria backward with all my remaining strength, sending her crashing hard into a heavy metal medicine cart.

She collapsed onto the floor, momentarily stunned, dropping the forged court order into a puddle of spilled water.

"If you ever touch my daughter again, I will kill you," I promised, my voice deadly and absolute.

I picked Maya up in my arms, completely ignoring the heavy weight, and followed Captain Vance down the smoky concrete stairwell.

We burst out into the freezing night air of the hospital parking lot, joining hundreds of evacuated patients and doctors.

Fire trucks and heavily armed SWAT vehicles were already swarming the scene, their flashing lights illuminating the chaos.

I sat Maya gently on the bumper of an ambulance, wrapping a warm shock blanket tightly around her shivering shoulders.

My phone rang loudly in my pocket, the caller ID displaying an unknown, heavily encrypted number.

I answered the call, expecting to hear the governor or another federal agent offering an update on Richard's arrest.

Instead, a chilling, mechanically altered voice whispered through the speaker.

"You survived the blast, Judge Elena, but you cannot protect her forever," the voice warned smoothly.

I looked around the crowded parking lot, desperately searching the shadows for anyone watching us.

The voice continued, delivering a terrifying final threat.

"Check the medical wristband on your daughter's arm before you celebrate your little victory."
