Chapter 3 - The Suffocating Truth

The gray smoke filled the classroom with terrifying speed, smelling heavily of burning plastic and chemicals.

Jordan rushed to the locked door and slammed his shoulder against the heavy wood, but it refused to budge.

Claire grabbed a heavy textbook and hurled it at the classroom window, but the reinforced safety glass merely spider-webbed without breaking.

"They are trying to suffocate us to make it look like a tragic accident!" Jordan coughed, covering his mouth with his shirt.

Claire dropped to her knees where the air was still slightly clearer and pulled her emergency backup phone from her sock.

She desperately dialed 911, but the screen displayed a glaring 'No Service' warning.

"Someone has activated a signal jammer inside the building," Claire realized with growing dread.

The smoke was becoming so thick that she could barely see Jordan standing just a few feet away.

Jordan grabbed a metal chair and began swinging it wildly against the reinforced window pane.

On the third massive strike, the glass finally shattered completely, letting in a rush of cool evening air.

"Climb out, right now!" Jordan yelled, helping boost Claire up to the window ledge.

Claire scrambled through the broken glass, cutting her hands slightly, and tumbled onto the soft grass outside.

Jordan jumped out right behind her just as the classroom's fire sprinklers finally triggered, flooding the room they had just escaped.

They collapsed on the lawn, gasping for clean air and coughing violently.

As they caught their breath, Claire noticed a dark figure standing near the edge of the school's parking lot.

It was Principal Vance, holding a walkie-talkie and watching the classroom window with absolute fury.

"The principal is in on it too," Claire whispered, pulling Jordan behind a large oak tree to hide.

"Of course he is, he is the one who orchestrates the fake scholarship funds," Jordan explained bitterly.

They waited in the shadows until the principal cursed loudly and walked back into the main building.

Claire and Jordan ran all the way to Claire's house, making sure nobody was following them.

Once safely locked inside her bedroom, Claire slid the micro SD card into her desktop computer.

The video played perfectly, showing Mrs. Whitmore's clear extortion and threats in crisp audio and video.

"We have the proof, we can take this straight to the local police in the morning," Claire said, feeling a surge of confidence.

Jordan shook his head, pointing at the screen with a trembling finger.

"You don't understand how deep this corruption goes, Claire," he warned her.

He pulled up a local news article on her computer, showing a picture of the town's Chief of Police.

The Chief was standing proudly at a charity gala, with his arm wrapped tightly around his wife.

Claire felt the blood drain completely from her face as she looked at the photograph.

The Chief's wife was Mrs. Whitmore, smiling brightly for the cameras.
