Chapter 5 - The Bloody Escape

The rusted metal door groaned loudly as Jason violently kicked it open.
Sunlight poured into the dark shed, blinding me for a crucial fraction of a second.
Jason lunged forward, swinging the heavy hunting knife directly toward my chest.
I rolled desperately to the side, feeling the sharp blade slice cleanly through the thick fabric of my skirt.
I grabbed a heavy, rusted metal wrench from the floor and swung it upward with all my remaining strength.
The heavy steel connected squarely with Jason's kneecap, causing a sickening crack to echo in the small room.
Jason screamed in absolute agony, dropping the knife and collapsing onto the muddy floor.
I scrambled to my feet, my bare feet slipping on the slick, wet concrete.
I sprinted out of the shed, leaving my screaming brother behind in the dark.
I ran back toward the main road, praying that Richard had managed to escape Liam's trap inside the venue.
A sleek, black armored SUV suddenly tore around the corner, screeching to a halt right in front of me.
The passenger door flew open, revealing Richard sitting in the front seat with blood staining his expensive shirt.
"Get in, right now!" Richard yelled, his eyes scanning the tree line for the corrupt police officers.
I threw myself into the luxurious leather seat, slamming the heavy armored door shut behind me.
Richard slammed his foot onto the gas pedal, the massive vehicle roaring down the quiet suburban highway.
"Are you hurt?" he asked, glancing worriedly at my torn and muddy wedding dress.
"Jason told me the truth about the trust fund and my real mother," I gasped, entirely ignoring my own injuries.
Richard's jaw tightened, his knuckles turning completely white as he gripped the steering wheel.
"I am so sorry I couldn't protect you from Evelyn's lies, Maya."
He explained that my real mother had been murdered by the syndicate when I was only a baby.
Evelyn was the housekeeper who had stolen me away in the chaos, pretending to be my savior while planning to steal my fortune.
"We need to get to your house immediately and secure the original trust documents," Richard ordered fiercely.
"If the syndicate finds those papers before we do, they will legally own everything your mother left behind."
As we approached my quiet suburban street, my blood ran completely cold.

Three black vans were parked illegally on my front lawn, and the front door of my house was smashed completely open.
"They beat us here," Richard whispered, pulling a heavy tactical pistol from the glove compartment.
