Chapter 2 - The Empty Grave

Warden Robert Mitchell watched the security footage of the visitation room with a deep frown.

He had never seen a condemned inmate react with such sudden hope just hours before their death.

He decided to bring Elena into his private office for a final interview.

Two guards escorted the shackled woman into the room and locked the door behind them.

Mitchell asked her directly what her daughter had whispered.

Elena looked the warden straight in the eye and told him the impossible truth.

She said her husband David was alive and waiting outside the prison walls.

Mitchell initially thought the stress of the execution had finally broken her mind.

He reminded her that he had personally read the autopsy report describing David's brutal murder.

Elena begged the warden to review the security cameras at the front gate.

She insisted that Chloe would never lie about seeing her own father.

Mitchell sighed heavily, but his gut instinct told him to look into her claim.

He turned to his computer and pulled up the live feed from the main entrance.

He scrolled back to the exact time the social worker's car had arrived.

A chill ran down the warden's spine as he watched the grainy footage.

Standing near a cluster of oak trees across the street was a tall man in a dark coat.

The man briefly looked up toward the camera before pulling his hat down low.

Mitchell paused the video and zoomed in on the stranger's face.

The resolution was poor, but the distinct scar on the man's jawline was unmistakable.

It was the exact same scar David Cole had acquired during a car accident ten years ago.

Mitchell realized that if David was alive, the state was about to murder an innocent woman.

He picked up his phone and immediately called the governor's private line.

He explained the bizarre situation and requested an emergency twenty-four-hour stay of execution.

The governor was furious, warning Mitchell that this would cause a massive media scandal.

Mitchell stood his ground, threatening to go to the press himself if the stay was denied.

Reluctantly, the governor granted the delay with only forty minutes left on the clock.

Elena collapsed in tears of relief when she heard the execution was suspended.

But Mitchell knew a temporary delay was not enough to save her life.

He needed hard physical evidence that the body buried in the local cemetery was not David.

He called a trusted friend who worked as a county judge to secure an emergency exhumation order.

By midnight, Mitchell stood in the pouring rain at the Whispering Pines Cemetery.

A small crew of gravediggers worked tirelessly to pull the heavy casket from the muddy earth.

The local coroner arrived with a crowbar to pry open the sealed lid.

Mitchell held his breath as the hinges groaned and the lid was thrown back.

The casket did not contain a decomposing human body.

It was filled to the brim with heavy sandbags and large river rocks.

The coroner gasped and stumbled backward into the mud.

Someone had faked the murder and buried an empty box to frame Elena.

Before Mitchell could even process the discovery, a blinding spotlight illuminated the graveyard.

Five armed men in tactical gear surrounded the open grave with assault rifles raised.

A familiar voice echoed from the darkness, ordering Mitchell to step away from the casket.
