Chapter 4 - The Frame Job

Mark coughed violently as the heavy, chemical smoke quickly filled the abandoned warehouse.

His vision began to blur, and his legs felt like they were made of solid lead.

He stumbled toward the locked metal doors, slamming his heavy flashlight against the rusted lock with every ounce of his remaining strength.

The lock finally shattered, and Mark threw his body weight against the door, bursting out into the cold, fresh air.

He collapsed onto the wet concrete, gasping desperately for oxygen as the toxins slowly cleared from his lungs.

When he finally managed to stand up, he realized his car was completely gone from where he had parked it.

He reached into his pocket for his phone, but it had fallen out during his desperate escape from the gas-filled room.

Stranded in the desolate industrial park, Mark began walking toward the main road, completely soaked and exhausted.

As he approached the highway, the wailing sound of multiple police sirens pierced the quiet night.

Three police cruisers screeched to a halt right in front of him, blinding him with their intense spotlights.

"Get on the ground right now and put your hands behind your head!" a heavily armed officer screamed through a bullhorn.

Mark slowly lowered himself to the wet asphalt, utterly confused by the aggressive police response.

Officers swarmed him, roughly pulling his arms behind his back and snapping cold metal handcuffs around his wrists.

"What is going on?!" Mark demanded as they hauled him forcefully to his feet.

"You are under arrest for the kidnapping and suspected murder of Lily Evans," the lead detective stated with absolute disgust.

Mark felt the entire world spin violently out of control as those horrific words processed in his mind.

"Are you insane?!" Mark screamed, fighting against the officers' iron grip.

"My daughter was abducted by Vanessa and Richard; you have to find them!"

The detective sneered, pulling a plastic evidence bag from his jacket pocket and holding it up to the spotlight.

Inside the bag was Mark's missing cell phone, covered in dark, fresh blood.

"We found your abandoned car near the river, containing this phone, a shovel, and your daughter's bloody shoes," the detective revealed.

Richard had completely anticipated Mark's every move, setting up a flawless, devastating frame job to eliminate him entirely.

By blaming Mark for the crime, Vanessa and Richard could permanently dispose of Lily and steal Mark's company without any resistance.

They shoved Mark into the back of the freezing patrol car, slamming the door shut on his desperate pleas.

As the cruiser sped toward the city precinct, Mark realized he was driving directly into an inescapable trap.

He knew that if he went into the jail system controlled by Richard, he would never make it out alive to save his daughter.

The police car slowed down as it approached a busy, chaotic intersection completely blocked by an unexpected traffic accident.

Mark noticed the officer driving had forgotten to engage the secondary child safety locks on the rear doors.

Using his cuffed hands, Mark quietly reached for the internal door handle, praying it would actually open.

The door clicked, popping open just an inch as the cruiser sat idling in the heavy traffic.

With a massive surge of adrenaline, Mark kicked the door fully open and threw himself out of the moving vehicle into the crowded street.
