Chapter 3 - The Ransom Demand

The cold rain soaked Mark to the bone as he stood on the balcony, clutching the terrifying ransom note.
He refused to wait for the corrupt local police, knowing Richard heavily influenced the entire department.
Mark ran back to his office, grabbed his keys, and rushed out to his car, his mind racing with pure, unadulterated panic.
As he sped down the slick, dangerous highway, his cell phone suddenly illuminated the dark cabin.
The caller ID displayed an unknown, encrypted number, but Mark answered it immediately.
"Where is she, Vanessa?!" Mark roared into the speaker, his grip tightening dangerously on the steering wheel.
A soft, cruel laugh echoed through the car's Bluetooth system.
"You really made a massive mistake humiliating my family today, Mark," Vanessa whispered mockingly.
"If you touch a single hair on her head, I will end you," Mark promised, his voice dripping with deadly intention.
"Oh, Lily is perfectly safe for now, enjoying a lovely ride in the trunk of a car," Vanessa taunted.
Mark slammed his fist against the dashboard, trying desperately to keep his emotions in check so he could think clearly.
"What do you want from me?" he asked, his voice cracking with the unbearable weight of a father's fear.
"I want you to sign over your entire tech company to my father, effective immediately," Vanessa demanded coldly.
"And you will also sign a legally binding non-disclosure agreement regarding everything that happened today."
Mark did not even hesitate for a fraction of a second.
"Bring the papers, I will sign whatever you want to get my daughter back," Mark agreed without question.
"I knew you would be reasonable eventually," Vanessa purred with sick satisfaction.
She gave him an address on the outskirts of the city, an abandoned industrial district bordering the river.
"Come completely alone, Mark, or your precious daughter takes a permanent swim," she warned before hanging up.
Mark pressed the accelerator to the floor, weaving recklessly through the midnight traffic to reach the destination.
He pulled into the desolate, crumbling warehouse district, his headlights sweeping across rusted shipping containers and broken glass.
He parked the car, grabbed a heavy steel flashlight from his glove compartment, and stepped out into the freezing rain.
The area was completely silent, except for the eerie sound of the river crashing against the concrete docks.
Mark walked cautiously toward the specific warehouse Vanessa had mentioned, pushing the heavy, rusted metal door open.
Inside, the massive room was lit only by a single, flickering bulb hanging from the high ceiling.
Sitting in the exact center of the room was a small wooden chair.
Mark's heart soared with hope for a brief second as he saw a small figure sitting in the shadows of the chair.
He ran forward, screaming Lily's name in pure desperation.
But when he reached the chair, he recoiled in absolute horror at what he found.
It was not Lily sitting there, but a realistic, life-sized porcelain doll dressed in Lily's torn flower girl dress.
Taped to the doll's forehead was a small, blinking red GPS tracker.

Before Mark could even process the sick joke, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse slammed shut and locked from the outside.
A loud, mechanical hissing sound suddenly echoed from the air vents, and thick, sweet-smelling smoke began pouring into the room.
