Chapter 10 - The Hidden Truth

A sharp, metallic click echoed loudly through the sterile hospital room.

Silas froze completely, realizing the sound did not come from his own weapon.

He slowly turned his head to find Dominic Castellano sitting upright in the hospital bed, holding a suppressed pistol aimed directly at Silas's temple.

Dominic's eyes were completely devoid of mercy, burning with a lethal, terrifying clarity.

"You always were too eager to sit in my chair, Silas," Dominic whispered hoarsely.

Before the Underboss could even utter a single word of defense, Dominic pulled the trigger.

Silas collapsed lifelessly to the floor, and the remaining guards immediately dropped their weapons in absolute surrender to their awakened king.

Dominic ordered the guards to clean up the mess and leave the room immediately.

Once they were completely alone, Dominic dropped the gun and weakly reached his hand out toward Mara.

She rushed forward, falling to her knees by his bedside and burying her face in his chest, sobbing uncontrollably.

"I am never letting you go again, Mara," Dominic promised, resting his chin gently on the top of her head.

Two months later, the Castellano empire had completely absorbed the ruined Russian cartel, becoming stronger and wealthier than ever before.

Dominic had fully recovered from his injuries, looking more formidable and handsome than ever in his tailored suits.

He drove Mara to a completely renovated, beautiful storefront in the heart of the city's best district.

He handed her a set of heavy brass keys with that rare, genuine smile she loved so much.

"I bought the bakery back, and it is entirely legally yours, free of any debt or mafia ties," Dominic announced proudly.

Mara leaped into his arms, kissing him passionately in the middle of the busy sidewalk.

She asked him if this meant she was finally fired from being his personal assistant.

Dominic laughed loudly, a beautiful sound that he now shared with her every single day.

"You are never fired, Mara, I am asking you to be my partner in everything," he smiled, pulling a stunning diamond ring from his pocket.

She said yes without a single moment of hesitation, securing their perfect, unbreakable happy ending.

A week later, Mara was happily cleaning out an old, rusted floor safe in the back office of her newly restored bakery.

She found a small, locked metal lockbox hidden beneath a stack of old, yellowed recipe cards.

She pried the lockbox open with a screwdriver, expecting to find her father's missing laundered money.

Instead, she found a single, heavily redacted birth certificate bearing the official seal of the state.

The document clearly stated that Dominic's presumed-dead younger sister, who supposedly perished in a fire thirty years ago, was actually Mara's biological mother.
