Chapter 9 - The Frame Job

Madeline backed away from the corpse in sheer horror.
The mafia boss of the East Coast had been brutally executed in a random Maine cabin.
She noticed a blood-stained hunting knife resting on the floor right beside her own footprints.
The realization hit her like a physical blow.
She was not just running from assassins anymore.
Serafina was framing her for the murder of the most powerful mobster in America.
The distant wail of police sirens began to echo through the mountains.
They were already coming for her.
Madeline noticed a satellite phone sticking out of the dead man's jacket pocket.
She snatched it up and dialed the only number she had memorized.
Dominic picked up on the first ring, his voice frantic and full of raw emotion.
She sobbed, telling him about the cabin, the body, and the approaching sirens.
Dominic commanded her to stay exactly where she was, promising he was only five minutes away.
She agreed, finally feeling a desperate sense of relief.
