Chapter 1 - The Captain's Secret

The cockpit door swung wide open.

The captain stepped into the main cabin and stopped dead in his tracks.

His face was completely pale as his eyes locked onto my fragile mother.

He looked like a man who had just seen a ghost.

The rude passenger across the aisle crossed his arms and smirked.

"It is about time you came out here to deal with this nuisance," the angry man sneered.

"These people have been ruining my flight."

The captain did not even glance at him.

He walked straight toward our row and slowly crouched down beside my mother.

"Agent Vance," the captain whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of awe and fear.

I stared at him in complete confusion.

My mother had been a quiet accountant for as long as I could remember.

She gently squeezed my hand and let out a deep, tired sigh.

"I have not used that name in twenty years, David," she replied softly.

The rude passenger slammed his hand on the armrest.

"Excuse me, I am talking to you!" he yelled at the captain.

The captain finally turned to the man with a cold, hardened glare.

"Sit down and remain completely silent, or I will have you restrained," he ordered sharply.

The man opened his mouth to argue but quickly shut it when he saw the pure authority in the captain's eyes.

The captain turned his attention back to my mother.

"The scanner at the gate flagged your boarding pass with a Priority Red code," he explained.

"That code is only used when an active threat is detected on a commercial airliner."

My mother closed her eyes for a brief moment.

"I did not trigger that code, David," she said.

A terrifying silence fell over our small section of the plane.

"If you did not trigger the alarm, then who did?" the captain asked nervously.

Suddenly, the plane lurched violently to the left.

The seatbelt sign chimed loudly throughout the cabin.

The flight attendant rushed over with wide, panicked eyes.

"Captain, we just lost all communication with the ground control tower," she gasped.

My mother sat up straight, suddenly looking much stronger than she had in months.

"They are already here," she whispered.
