Chapter 8 - The Threat

The rock shattered the expensive antique glass, sending sharp shards spraying across Alexander's mahogany desk.
He instinctively ducked, covering his head as the cold winter wind instantly rushed into the warm study.
A piece of paper was tied tightly around the heavy stone with a thick rubber band.
Alexander stood up slowly, brushing the glass from his sleeves, his heart pounding with raw anger.
He untied the note and unfolded it, reading the messy, aggressive handwriting.
The note read: "Stop digging, or the little girl pays the price."
Alexander crumpled the paper in his fist, his blood running completely cold at the threat against Rosie.
David’s powerful family in Chicago had clearly hired local thugs in Milbrook to intimidate him into dropping the investigation.
They severely underestimated the man they were trying to frighten.
Alexander immediately called the local police to report the vandalism and requested a permanent patrol car outside his estate.
He then contacted a high-end private security firm, hiring a team of former military contractors to guard Clara and Rosie around the clock.
By morning, the quiet Victorian house had been transformed into a fully secure fortress.
Clara sat at the kitchen island, sipping tea and watching the security guards patrol the snowy gardens.
"Alexander, I am putting you in terrible danger," Clara said, her voice heavy with guilt.
"We should just leave. We can disappear again."
"Absolutely not," Alexander replied firmly, pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"You are done running, Clara. We have the evidence to clear your name, and I will not let these cowards win."
He walked over to the empty green armchair in the living room, staring at it for a long moment.
Hannah had always believed in standing up for people who couldn't stand up for themselves.
He was finally honoring her memory in the way she truly deserved.
Later that afternoon, the phone in the kitchen rang loudly.
It was Alexander's high-priced defense attorney calling from Chicago.
"Mr. Hale, I have excellent news," the lawyer announced enthusiastically.
"The District Attorney received our forensic evidence. They are officially dropping all charges against Clara."
Alexander let out a massive sigh of relief, smiling warmly at Clara, who covered her mouth in shock.
"Furthermore, an arrest warrant has been issued for David," the lawyer continued.
"The FBI raided his office an hour ago. He is currently in federal custody."
Clara burst into tears of pure, unadulterated joy, hugging Rosie tightly against her chest.
The terrifying nightmare that had haunted her for years was finally, permanently over.
Alexander canceled the security detail that evening, knowing the threat had been completely neutralized with David behind bars.
They celebrated with a massive feast, laughing and enjoying the profound peace that had finally settled over the house.
After dinner, Clara walked into the living room and slowly approached the empty green armchair.
She looked at Alexander, asking a silent question with her soft, empathetic eyes.
"It belonged to my wife," Alexander explained quietly, stepping into the room.
"She used to sit there and sketch for hours. No one has sat in it since she passed away."
Clara reached up and unclasped the silver sunflower necklace from her neck.
She gently draped the beautiful pendant over the corner of the green armchair.
"She saved my life in Chicago, Alexander, and she brought me to you so you could save my life here," Clara whispered softly.
"She is still taking care of people, even now."
Alexander stared at the silver necklace resting on the chair, feeling the crushing weight of his grief finally begin to lift.

He realized he was ready to start living again, to fill his massive, empty house with love and laughter.
But as he turned to thank Clara, the heavy brass knocker on the front door pounded urgently.
