Chapter 5 - The Diagnosis

The nurse’s words hung heavily in the sterile air of the hospital room.
Clara’s face went entirely pale, her grip tightening painfully around Rosie’s small hand.
Alexander gestured for the nurse to step out into the hallway, not wanting to frighten the little girl any further.
He closed the heavy door behind him and braced himself for whatever terrible news was coming.
The nurse looked at him with profound sympathy, handing him a printed medical chart.
"The chest x-ray showed significant fluid in her lungs from the pneumonia," the nurse explained quietly.
"But the secondary scans revealed a mass near her left ventricle. We suspect it is advanced congestive heart failure."
Alexander felt the ground literally drop out from beneath his expensive leather shoes.
It was the exact same cruel, relentless disease that had taken Hannah from him six years ago.
He stumbled backward, leaning heavily against the cold cinderblock wall of the hospital corridor.
"Is it treatable?" Alexander managed to ask, his voice barely a raw whisper.
"She needs a specialist in Philadelphia," the nurse replied gravely. "And likely an extremely expensive, high-risk surgery to repair the valve."
"If she doesn't get the surgery soon, her heart simply will not survive the strain of the pneumonia."
Alexander nodded slowly, his brilliant, calculating mind shifting entirely from grief to logistics.
He was a millionaire. He had resources, connections, and power that Clara Evans could never even dream of possessing.
He would not sit in a chair and watch another woman he cared about slowly die in front of him.
He walked back into the hospital room, forcing a calm, reassuring smile onto his face for Rosie's sake.
Clara looked at him with terrified, knowing eyes.
She had felt her body failing for months, the exhaustion and the breathlessness, but she had ignored it to keep providing for her daughter.
"It's my heart, isn't it?" Clara asked softly, tears spilling down her cheeks.
"Yes," Alexander confirmed gently, sitting on the edge of the bed and taking her trembling hand.
"But we are going to fight it. I am transferring you to the best cardiac center in Philadelphia this afternoon."
Clara shook her head, sobbing openly now.
"I don't have insurance, Alexander. I can't afford a specialist. They won't even look at me."
"I am paying for everything," Alexander stated with absolute, unshakeable certainty.
"You are going to live, Clara. You are going to raise Rosie, and you are going to wear that sunflower necklace for a very long time."
Within three hours, Alexander had chartered a private medical helicopter to transport Clara to Philadelphia.
He packed a small bag for Rosie and strapped her safely into the passenger seat of his luxury sedan.
They drove the two hours to the city in quiet companionship, the snowy landscape blurring past the windows.
Rosie held a small stuffed bear she had brought from the apartment, her eyes fixed nervously on the road ahead.
When they arrived at the massive, state-of-the-art hospital, Clara was already being prepped for emergency surgery.
The top cardiac surgeon in the state met Alexander in the waiting room, reviewing the charts with a grim expression.
"The valve is severely damaged," the surgeon explained. "The surgery has a forty percent mortality rate given her current weakened state from the pneumonia."
Alexander felt a cold chill run down his spine, but he nodded firmly.
"Do whatever it takes to save her," he ordered.
The surgery lasted eight agonizing hours.
Alexander sat in the waiting room with Rosie, reading her stories, buying her awful vending machine snacks, and distracting her from the terrifying reality of what was happening behind the surgical doors.
Finally, just past midnight, the surgeon walked out into the waiting area, looking completely exhausted.
He pulled off his surgical cap and walked straight toward Alexander.

Before the doctor could speak, a frantic nurse ran out of the surgical wing, her face pale with panic.
"Doctor, she is crashing!" the nurse yelled. "Her heart just stopped!"
