Chapter 7 - The Arrest Warrant

Alexander stared at the sheriff, completely stunned by the absurd statement.

"An arrest warrant?" Alexander repeated, his voice laced with disbelief and growing anger.

"On what possible charges?"

The sheriff shifted uncomfortably, pulling a folded legal document from his heavy winter coat.

"Grand larceny and corporate embezzlement," the sheriff read, sounding as confused as Alexander felt.

"The warrant was issued out of Chicago this morning. They claim she stole over fifty thousand dollars from a former employer before she fled to Pennsylvania."

Alexander’s brilliant, calculating mind immediately went into overdrive.

He knew Clara had lived on the streets of Chicago as a teenager, struggling just to survive.

It was entirely impossible that a homeless girl had somehow embezzled fifty thousand dollars from a corporation.

"This is clearly a mistake, Sheriff," Alexander stated firmly, blocking the doorway with his broad shoulders.

"Clara is recovering from major open-heart surgery. I am not letting you drag her into a freezing jail cell over a clerical error."

The sheriff sighed, holding up his hands in a placating gesture.

"I know she is sick, Mr. Hale, but I have to execute the warrant. My hands are completely tied by the interstate agreement."

Alexander realized he could not fight the law directly on his front porch.

He stepped aside, leading the sheriff into the warm hallway while instructing Rosie to go upstairs and watch television.

He knocked gently on Clara’s bedroom door before opening it.

Clara was sitting up in bed, looking exhausted but peaceful as she read a book.

When she saw the sheriff standing behind Alexander, all the color instantly drained from her pale face.

"Clara, they have an arrest warrant from Chicago," Alexander explained gently, stepping close to the bed.

"They are claiming you embezzled money. Do you have any idea what this is about?"

Clara began to tremble violently, her hand flying up to clutch the silver sunflower necklace.

"It wasn't me," she whispered, tears instantly spilling down her cheeks. "It was my ex-boyfriend, David."

Clara explained that David worked as a low-level accountant for a massive logistics firm in Chicago.

When Clara tried to leave him because he was abusive, David framed her for the money he had been secretly stealing.

He used her name to open dummy accounts and forged her signature on the transfer documents.

Clara had fled the city with nothing but the clothes on her back to protect Rosie from him.

"He promised he would destroy my life if I ever left," Clara sobbed, burying her face in her hands.

Alexander felt a cold, terrifying fury settle deep into his bones.

He was not going to let an abusive coward ruin the life of the woman he had just saved.

He turned to the sheriff, pulling his cell phone from his pocket.

"I am calling the best defense attorney in the state," Alexander announced.

"Clara is not going to a cell. I will pay whatever bail is required to keep her in this house under house arrest."

The sheriff agreed, clearly relieved that he didn't have to drag a recovering heart patient into the freezing night.

An hour later, Alexander's high-priced lawyers had successfully posted a massive bail, keeping Clara safely in her warm bed.

But the legal victory was only temporary.

The lawyers warned Alexander that David had created an incredibly thorough, devastating paper trail.

Unless they could prove David was the real thief, Clara would be extradited to Chicago and likely face ten years in federal prison.

Alexander sat in his study late that night, staring at the glowing screen of his laptop.

He knew he couldn't just throw money at this problem; he had to destroy David's carefully constructed lie.

He hired a team of elite private investigators and forensic accountants in Chicago to tear David's life apart.

Three days later, the lead investigator called Alexander with a massive breakthrough.

"Mr. Hale, we found the stolen money," the investigator reported, sounding triumphant.

"David didn't spend it. He invested it in a shell company, and we have the IP addresses proving he accessed the accounts from his own home computer."

Alexander smiled, feeling a dangerous, vindictive satisfaction.

"Send the evidence directly to the Chicago District Attorney," Alexander ordered.

"I want the charges against Clara dropped by morning, and I want a warrant issued for David."

The investigator hesitated for a moment before speaking again.

"There is one more thing, Mr. Hale... David isn't just an accountant."

May you like

"He is the nephew of the CEO, and they know we are looking into him."

Before Alexander could process the warning, a heavy rock smashed violently through the study window.
