Chapter 1 - The Morning Visit

I opened the heavy oak door with a perfectly calm expression.

The two uniformed deputies removed their hats as they stepped onto my grand marble foyer.

"Are you the legal spouse of Trevor Vance?" the older officer asked with a grim expression.

I nodded slowly while tightening the belt of my silk robe.

"We regret to inform you that Mr. Vance is currently in federal custody," he continued.

I raised a single eyebrow, feigning a look of mild concern.

"Was he arrested for bigamy?" I asked softly.

The younger officer exchanged a highly confused glance with his partner.

"No, ma'am," he replied in a serious tone.

"He was arrested an hour ago at the state border for grand larceny and federal identity theft."

They explained that the boutique fitness startup I had been generously funding was actually a shell company for a massive money-laundering operation.

But that was not the news that shattered his grand scheme forever.

"The man you know as Trevor Vance is actually Thomas Reed, a convicted felon from Florida," the older deputy said.

"Your marriage to him was never legally binding because he used a stolen identity on your marriage certificate."

I stared at them, absorbing the absolute perfection of this unexpected revelation.

Trevor had thought he could extort me by marrying my naive younger sister.

Instead, his fake identity meant he had zero legal claim to a single penny of my six-million-dollar estate.

He had played himself entirely and destroyed his own leverage.

Then, the younger officer handed me a sealed plastic evidence bag.

"We found this hidden in the trunk of his impounded rental car," he said.

Inside the plastic bag was a life insurance policy taken out under my name.

It was worth exactly ten million dollars, and the ink on my forged signature was barely dry.

The primary beneficiary was not Trevor.

The sole beneficiary listed on the policy was my twenty-two-year-old sister, Hailey.

My own flesh and blood had not just betrayed my marriage.

She had actively conspired with a con artist to have me murdered for a massive payout.

Before I could even process this horrifying betrayal, my cell phone buzzed on the entryway table.

The caller ID displayed the name of my private wealth manager.

I answered the call with shaking hands, expecting to hear that my accounts were secure.

"Clara, you need to come to the bank immediately," my manager panicked over the phone.

"Someone just bypassed our security protocols and entirely emptied your corporate reserve accounts."
