Chapter 4 - The Agency Mole

I stared at the silver emblem in my hand, feeling a profound sense of betrayal wash over me.
My entire life, my career, and my family had been nothing but a carefully orchestrated lie constructed by my own agency.
"Commander, we need to extract from this location immediately," Whitmore warned, scanning the dark tree line with his thermal optics.
I nodded in agreement, knowing that standing around in an open field was practically a death sentence.
"Get everyone into the armored transports and route us to the Alpha black-site facility," I ordered quickly.
We piled into the heavy vehicles, the massive tires tearing up the manicured lawn as we sped away from my childhood home.
Inside the dimly lit cabin of the transport, I sat across from the stretcher where my grandfather was currently resting.
His breathing was shallow, but the emergency medical fluids were finally bringing some color back to his pale cheeks.
"Commander, I just ran a deep encrypted trace on the license plates of those attacking vehicles," Whitmore reported from the front seat.
"Let me guess," I replied bitterly. "They belong to our own government."
Whitmore nodded slowly, his expression tight with extreme concern.
"The plates are registered to a classified black-ops division operating under the codename Project Genesis."
I clenched my fists so tightly that my fingernails dug painfully into my palms.
"I need total access to the Genesis files the absolute second we arrive at the safe house," I demanded.
Before Whitmore could even respond, a massive explosion violently rocked our armored transport truck.
The vehicle skidded wildly across the wet asphalt, the reinforced windows cracking under an immense shockwave.

"We just hit an improvised explosive device!" the driver screamed, fighting desperately to maintain control of the steering wheel.
A second explosive charge detonated beneath our back axle, flipping the massive truck entirely upside down in a terrifying crash of grinding metal.
