Chapter 1 - The Tactical Breach

"Move in right now," I commanded into my encrypted device.

"We have highly dangerous suspects currently on site."

My parents chuckled, entirely convinced I was just putting on a bluff.

Brandon crossed his arms, flashing that arrogant smirk as he leaned against the kitchen counter.

"Who are you calling, Claire, the mall security team?" he mocked loudly.

That smug amusement vanished instantly when three heavily armored tactical trucks smashed through our pristine iron gates.

The deafening roar of diesel engines shook the very foundation of the expensive suburban estate.

More than twenty operators in full tactical gear swarmed the manicured lawn, carrying assault rifles equipped with laser sights.

"Federal agents, get on the ground right now!" a voice boomed through a high-powered megaphone.

Diane screamed in pure terror as the expensive champagne glass slipped from her hand and shattered on the hardwood floor.

Michael stumbled backward, his face turning completely pale as red targeting lasers danced across his chest.

"Claire, what in the world is happening here?" my father stammered, raising his hands in surrender.

I ignored him completely and rushed back to the damp, rotting shed where my grandfather was lying.

Two field medics sprinted behind me with a specialized trauma kit to stabilize his fragile condition.

I knelt in the mud, gently taking his bruised, freezing hand into mine.

"You are safe now, Grandpa," I whispered, fighting back the tears burning in my eyes.

He coughed violently, his bony fingers gripping my wrist with a surprising amount of desperate strength.

He pulled me closer until his dry lips were practically touching my ear.

"They are not your real parents, Claire," he whispered hoarsely.

"They are your wardens, and they have been studying you since you were a little child."
